Traffic and E-bike Safety Guidelines
Safe Rides Safe Lives
Foreword
Dear students, as you settle into university life, it's important to prioritize your safety, especially when traveling around campus and the surrounding areas.
E-bikes are a popular and convenient way to get around, but it's crucial to follow traffic rules to ensure the safety of both riders and pedestrians.
Safety Guidelines
01
Always Wear A Helmet
Apart from the campus pass, a helmet is another necessity you must have to ride the e-bike on campus. Wearing a helmet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself from serious injury. Accidents can happen unexpectedly, and helmets can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries. Here are some tips:
●Ensure your helmet fits properly and is securely fastened.
● Replace your helmet if it’s been involved in a crash.
●Without helmet it is NOT ALLOWED to ride e-bike on campus and the campus pass will also be canceled.
02
Ride Solo Only
E-bikes on campus are strictly limited to one rider at a time. It’s important to follow these rules to ensure safety:
● Only one person is allowed to ride an e-bike at a time.
● Carrying passengers is NOT PERMITTED under any circumstances.
● If found riding with more than one person, you will be fined by the traffic police, your campus pass will be canceled, and the disciplinary action will be taken.
03
Obey Traffic Rules
As an e-bike rider, you are expected to follow the same traffic rules as any motor vehicle. This includes:
● Stopping at red lights and stop signs.
● Yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks.
● Using designated bike lanes where available.
● Avoiding riding on sidewalks unless explicitly allowed.
● Respecting speed limits, especially in crowded areas on campus.
04
Stay Alert
Distracted riding is a leading cause of accidents. Here’s how to stay focused:
● Don’t use your phone or listen to loud music while riding.
● Keep both hands on the handlebars.
● Be aware of your surroundings—watch for pedestrians, vehicles, and other cyclists.
05
Use Signal Lights
Communication with other road users is key to staying safe. Always use signal lights to indicate your intentions, such as turning or stopping:
● Turn on the left signal light to signal a left turn.
● Turn on the right signal light to signal a right turn.
● If your bike doesn’t have signal lights, use hands to signal.
06
Check Your E-Bike Regularly
Before you ride, it’s important to ensure your e-bike is in good working condition. Regular maintenance can prevent accidents caused by mechanical failures. Check:
● Tire pressure and tread condition.
● Brakes for proper function.
● Battery charge level.
● Lights and reflectors, especially if you ride at night.
07
Ride at a Safe Speed
While it’s tempting to speed, especially when you’re in a hurry, riding too fast can be dangerous. Be mindful of:
●Inside campus the speed of your e-bike cannot exceed 15kmph.
● Slowing down near intersections or when visibility is low.
● Maintaining control over your e-bike at all times.
08
Be Cautious at Intersections
Intersections are high-risk areas for accidents. When approaching an intersection:
● Slow down and be prepared to stop.
● Look both ways before crossing.
● Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
● Follow traffic signals carefully.
09
Display a Valid Campus Pass
To ride your e-bike on campus, a valid campus pass is required. This ensures that only authorized individuals are using campus facilities. Follow these guidelines:
● The campus pass must be properly stuck to your e-bike and should not be removed or transferred to another bike.
●Removing or tampering with the campus pass is prohibited.
● Creating or using a fake campus pass will result in disciplinary action.
● Always ensure your pass is clearly visible and in accordance with university guidelines.
Your safety and the safety of others are paramount. By following these simple but essential guidelines, you can enjoy your e-bike rides without putting yourself or others at risk. Let’s work together to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for everyone!
