In Zhengzhou, Henan Province, a man identified as Mr. Zhang was severely injured while bathing at a hot spring hotel. On December 5, as he was exiting a bathing pool, a sharp ceramic edge cut his private area, causing a deep wound that required eight stitches.
Mr. Zhang recounted the traumatic experience: “I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. The pain was unbearable; I even fainted. It’s still painful to walk, and the hotel hasn’t offered any response.” Despite the severity of the incident, he claims the hotel's management has shown little accountability.
In response, the hotel manager admitted that the pool's edge had gaps due to misaligned construction but shifted part of the blame to Mr. Zhang, stating, “He had been drinking alcohol, so he must also take responsibility.”
This response angered Mr. Zhang’s friend, who argued, “Drinking one bottle of beer didn’t make him dizzy or clumsy. Should we blame his skin for not being thick enough?”
The incident has sparked heated discussions online, with many netizens criticizing the hotel’s handling of the situation. One user commented, “It’s absurd for a hotel to blame a customer for their own negligence. The safety standards are clearly lacking.” Another wrote, “The focus shouldn’t be on whether he drank or not. Why was the pool so dangerous in the first place?”
However, some netizens pointed out that drinking alcohol before entering a hot spring could increase risks, as it affects judgment and balance. A more moderate voice added, “Both sides need to take responsibility. The hotel should compensate for the injury, but customers should also avoid risky behavior, like drinking in such settings.”
