ABSTRACT

The transportation system is often disrupted by natural hazards and human-made accidents, which cause severe consequences to people’s mobility, the local economy, and the society in general. Particularly, the more and more frequent and severe impacts of climate change are posing great challenges and will continue to impact the globe for many years. Building resilient multimodal interconnected transportation systems under such attacks are critical for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. However, resilience measurements of transportation system conditions and performance are incomplete and limited in addressing the complex characteristics of the system and uncertainties of the attacks. This presentation will demonstrate the modeling and characteristics of vulnerability and resilience of the complex multimodal transportation systems under disruptions of climate change and operational incidents. Such measurements are also explored and discussed for future intelligent transportation system with connected autonomous vehicles. The above efforts are expected to contribute to a resilient, sustainable and intelligent transportation system by incorporating the risk-based resilience measurements in the transportation planning, maintenance and decision-making processes.
