Primary and secondary schools in numerous Chinese cities have extended class breaks from 10 to 15 minutes at the start of the autumn semester in an effort to encourage outdoor activities among both students and instructors.
In the past, schools in China have instituted 10-minute breaks between classes, which has limited the time available for students, particularly those residing in multistory buildings, to participate in outdoor activities.
In certain instances, schools also prohibited students from exiting classrooms during intervals to address safety concerns.
The decision to extend break periods is consistent with the ongoing endeavours of local education authorities to optimise school schedules, thereby guaranteeing that students can engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity each day. In Shandong province, cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Qingdao have implemented extended vacations into their academic schedules.
Beijing reallocated the extended break times from longer playtime periods without significantly affecting the students' overall schedules.
The municipal education bureau has announced a five-minute extension to middle school dismissal times, while primary school morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times remain unchanged.
Schools in the Xinwu district of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, have introduced a daily physical education class and mandated 15-minute breaks. The district's education bureau mandates that students engage in a minimum of 100 minutes of physical activity on campus daily, with the aim of promoting social interaction and outdoor activities.
The bureau also banned early class beginnings and restrictions on students' break activities, emphasizing that the goal is to "return break time to the students."
According to a local news report, a primary school in Qingdao implemented a diverse array of outdoor games, including hula hoop and jump rope exercises, in conjunction with interior puzzle games during the 15-minute break. In order to guarantee that each student has the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities, the institution arranges students by floor. The percentage of Qingdao pupils who achieved "excellent" or "good" fitness ratings increased by 10 percentage points to 47 percent, according to physical fitness monitoring conducted in May.
