The National Immigration Administration reported that the country's ongoing initiatives to promote cross-border travel resulted in a significant increase in the number of foreigners who were able to enter China without a visa in the third quarter.
According to Zhang Ning, a spokesperson for the administration, the number of visa-free entries by foreign nationals in China exceeded 4.88 million during the period, representing a 78.6 percent year-over-year increase.
Zhang stated at a news conference that the total number of foreigners entering China during the same period increased by 48.8 percent, reaching over 8.18 million.
In the third quarter, the country issued 807,000 visas to foreign nationals, a 32.7 percent increase from the same period in the previous year.
Zhang asserted that the country's initiatives to facilitate foreigners' travel this year are the direct cause of the accelerated increases.
In the third quarter, the administration implemented a series of measures to simplify visa policies for international travelers.
In late July, the administration issued a statement stating that tourists from countries with diplomatic relations with China are eligible to enter Hainan province without a visa and remain for a maximum of 144 hours if they arrive in a group organised by travel agencies registered in the Hong Kong or Macao special administrative regions.
The administration issued the statement approximately two weeks after expanding the 144-hour visa-free transit policy to three additional ports in Henan and Yunnan provinces, making 37 ports of entry in China eligible for the policy.
The expansion has enabled citizens of 54 countries to transit through Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in Henan, allowing them to remain in the province for a maximum of six days without a visa.
They may also benefit from a six-day visa-free stay in nine cities and prefectures of the Southwest China province if they transit through Lijiang Sanyi International Airport and Mohan Railway Port in Yunnan.
Zhang stated that these measures' synergistic effect has achieved their multifaceted benefits.
According to Zhang, the administration will persist in its efforts to enhance the visa-free transit policy and other policies, as well as collaborate with pertinent departments to facilitate the travel and stay of foreigners in China.
