A 33-year-old Chinese national was arrested at Fukuoka Airport on October 4 for alleged sexual assault in Tokyo earlier this year.
The suspect, identified as Cheung Wai-hung, reportedly committed the offense in Asakusa of Tokyo in June.
According to Japanese reports, Cheung flew into Tokyo on June 7 with his girlfriend. On June 9, he was said to have groped the breast of a local woman in her 20s at shopping street Asakusa Shin-Nakamise under the pretext of helping to brush an insect off her clothing.
The woman filed a report with the police, and Cheung departed the country the following day.
It wasn't until last Friday that Japanese authorities nabbed Cheung at Fukuoka Airport when he was flying into the country from Hong Kong, with Cheung rejecting claims of his involvement.
Japanese authorities said apart from the shopping street case, police also received another similar report in the Asakusa area that day. Cheung was identified as the suspect after reviewing surveillance footage.
Meanwhile, according to Hong Kong records, a man with the same name was arrested for multiple sexual assault offenses and theft in 2020. He was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail in April 2021. Source: The Standard
