China has carried numerous historical legacies of governance from the imperial and revolutionary eras into the digital age. How do these historical shadows clash with a modernized, networked society? Drawing on computational analyses of extensive data on propaganda, government documents, and public opinion, this talk examines how China has adapted its governance practices to meet contemporary challenges —and whether these adaptations have been effective. The aim is to offer insights into the future prospects of China and its engagement with the world.
