A woman in South China’s Guangdong Province was detained for maliciously editing her ex-boyfriend’s photo into a fake memorial and falsely accusing him of drug use, according to a report shared by local police on Tuesday.

The woman, identified only by her surname Huang, had a conflict with her ex-boyfriend following their breakup. Rather than moving on, Huang decided to take revenge by defaming him in a particularly cruel way. She edited his photo to resemble a posthumous portrait, complete with funeral-style background music, and added text accusing him of drug use. Furthermore, she went as far as to insult his family, claiming his mother was involved in prostitution. Huang then posted this content on a popular short video platform, hoping to publicly humiliate him.

The video quickly garnered attention, leading to significant distress for her ex-boyfriend and his family. In response, local police were alerted to the situation and launched an investigation. After determining the nature of Huang’s actions, authorities detained her for administrative violations.

In the same announcement, the public security bureau revealed additional cases of cyberbullying that have emerged recently. These cases include incidents where individuals provided paid services for verbally abusing others on social media platforms. In one case, disgruntled employees uploaded photos and videos of their employer and the employer’s wife, filled with defamatory and insulting content, as a form of retaliation over wage disputes.
