A 36-year-old woman in China has stirred national debate after proudly announcing her new role as a grandmother, following the birth of her 18-year-old son's first child. The grandmother, surnamed Liu, is from Huizhou, Guangdong province, and works in interior decorating. On August 22, she shared a video on Douyin,  where she held her newborn grandson, beaming with pride.

Liu captioned the video: "I'm so happy and proud to have such an adorable grandson. My daughter-in-law has worked hard." Her son, just 18, and his 20-year-old wife welcomed their first child but are unable to legally marry due to China's legal marriage age, which is set at 22 for men and 20 for women. Despite the legal hurdle, Liu and her husband, 38, expressed excitement about becoming grandparents so young.

Liu also revealed that early marriage and parenthood run in her family. The newborn’s great-grandmother, Liu’s mother, is only 58 years old. Liu added that she enjoys a close bond with her 20-year-old daughter-in-law, even sharing videos of the two shopping together.

The family’s story quickly went viral on Chinese social media, sparking heated discussions about early marriage and parenthood. On Weibo, related topics garnered over 52 million views.

Some netizens praised Liu, saying she was fortunate to embrace grandparenthood early. “At 36, I’m still overwhelmed by work, but Liu is enjoying a new phase of life - she's the real winner,” one user commented.

Others, however, voiced concern about the family’s choices. Critics argued that the young parents should prioritize education and personal development. "At 18, the son should be in university, not raising a child," one commenter remarked, questioning the family's educational background.
