While waiting for a flight to Bali at Singapore's Changi Airport, Tanya Bridget Hughes, 36, engaged in an extensive theft spree that lasted an hour and forty minutes. Hughes, a British national, stole cosmetics, neck pillows, and other items worth over S$600 from several shops in Terminal 4.

On Thursday, Hughes was fined S$5,000 (approximately US$3,840) by a Singapore court for her crimes. She admitted guilt to three theft charges, with an additional five charges being considered in the court’s decision. The court's decision reflects the severity of her actions and the impact on the airport’s retail operations.

The court proceedings revealed that on May 31, Hughes was at Changi Airport’s Terminal 4, preparing for her scheduled 4:10 PM flight to Bali. At around 1 PM, she entered The Shilla Cosmetics and Perfumes Outlet located in Terminal 4 Departure Transit Central. She spent time browsing the Estee Lauder section, where she began her theft spree.

Hughes's actions involved not only the pilfering of high-value cosmetics but also various other items from different stores within the terminal. Her theft spree caused a significant disturbance in the airport’s retail environment and prompted a swift legal response.

The judge's decision to impose a fine highlights the seriousness of shoplifting offenses and serves as a deterrent to others who might consider similar actions. The case underscores the importance of maintaining security and vigilance in high-traffic areas such as airports, where the convergence of many travelers makes such crimes a pressing concern.
