Lead-in

(1)Setting the scene

创设模拟联合国情境、明确写作任务

Here is a picture of China's representative speaking at the UN. As for youth, have you ever dreamed of expressing your opinions on big affairs. Now comes your chance.

There is a World Model United Nations, open to teenagers who want to express their ideas. The topic of this year in sea exploration: helpful or harmful?

Suppose you are one of the representative, what will you express? Here are some pictures for your inspiration...

No matter what point you make, you are supposed to give your reasons to persuade listeners. Now, comes to the question: How to persuade others and support your opinion? This is the key point we are going to learn in this class.

Reading

(1)Scan for the genre

Here are two passages. Let's scan them and find their genre first. What are they? [Argumentative essay]

And here is the clue "Argumentative essay is a type of writing in which writers try to persuade readers to understand and support their point." So let's explore text 1 first and find out the author's opinion and how does the author persuade us.

(2)Scan for the argument

Q1 What's the author's opinion? [para.1; The author thinks that sea exploration has caused many problems and will continue to cost more.]

Q2 In these arguments, can you read the author's emotion? Pay attention to the tenses it adopted. ["has cost", the present perfect..What do they indicate? Maybe it indicates that they also worry steeply on the problems.]

Q3 Then why does the author so concerned? What are the problems it caused? Let's scan for the evidence this time.

(3)Scan for the evidence

Q1 How many evidence are there? [3; 1--more exploration means more pollution. 2--mining for resources is very damaging, especially in the Arctic. 3--overfishing is another problem.]

Q2 It seems that the author does have good reasons to feel worried. But do you believe in all the reasons? How does the author explain his worries? Let's read the explanation one by one.

细读三大论点,提炼三大写作技巧

①In the 1st evidence--more exploration means more pollution. So what pollution does it bring about?  [...oil was spilled, caused the deaths of sabards; plastic pollution, birds and fish were also killed]

The author provides us with facts. Meanwhile, the detailed numbers and specific time add more credibility. So in order to be persuasive, we can present facts with detailed data.

②In the 2nd evidence--mining resources is very damaging. Why it is very damaging? Can you find out a reason? [climate change.. warmer...less ice...more fossil fuel, get burnt, worsen]

In this paragraph, the author use the expressions like because of which means to explain the cause and effect for us to understand.

Here comes the 3rd evidence--Over fishing is another problem. How serious the problem is? Can you read the author's emotion? Here, let's focus on the expressions. [So quiet, bend, murdering, intelligent and without mercy, you might feel the author's strong criticism on overfishing.]

As a measure of fact, using words and phrases tinged with emotion can also be persuasive.

④How about the last paragraph? There is no more evidence. Then what does the author convey? [...It is more sensitive than we think.]   How sensitive? [Mining resources could bring a severe negative circle to the climate.]   So what does the author convey? [It seems that he concludes his opinions mentioned before.]

This is a restatement. In the restatement, we should link the point mentioned before back to the topic.

How does the author callback? His great concern showed before in language, you may notice that there are some impressions. ["It is home to life, not human beings possessions."  "It is a huge but more sensitive if we do not protect it now, our next generation will not forgive us."]

They are all contrast. So in order to be persuasive, we can make contrasts so as to highlight our opinions.

(4)Self-regulated reading

老师总结文本1,以此类推学生自己处理文本2.

Now let's have a look at the structure. An argumentative essay should contains argument, evidence, and restatement. Let's have a try. Here is the hamburger structure pattern. Please read the text 2 by yourself and try to find out its argument, evidence and restatement.

You have grasped the structure of argumentative essay!

平行文本处理详略得当,只讲解文本2的亮点

While reading, you must find there are some opinions in the opposite side. Why does the author mentioned the opposite opinion? [In fact, it shows that the author is aware of the opponents view. So as to add objectivity to the argumentative essay.]
