“霜降”节气反映的是天气渐渐变冷的气候特征,并不是表示进入这个节气就会“降霜”。
其实,“霜”也不是从天上降下来的,“霜”是地面的水气由于温差变化遇到寒冷空气凝结成。“霜降”节气与“降霜”无关。

Frost's Descent, known as Shuāng Jiàng (霜降) in Chinese, is the 18th solar term in the traditional lunar calendar and typically falls around October 23. It marks the end of autumn and the beginning of early winter. As temperatures drop, the dew on grass and plants freezes, turning into frost, which symbolizes the deepening cold and the changing of the seasons. In many regions of China, this is a crucial time for nature, agriculture, and cultural practices.
Frost’s Descent is significant for farmers, as it represents the final stage of the harvest season. Across China, especially in agricultural communities, farmers hurry to gather the last crops before winter arrives. This period is essential for preserving and storing food for the cold months ahead. Grains, fruits, and vegetables are stored to sustain families throughout winter, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation in traditional Chinese agriculture.
One of the most well-known traditions during Frost's Descent is the consumption of persimmons. These vibrant orange fruits ripen during this time and are thought to be particularly beneficial for health. Persimmons are believed to nourish the lungs and prevent colds, especially in the dry, cold air of early winter. According to traditional Chinese medicine, persimmons help balance the body during seasonal transitions, protecting against illnesses that are common when the weather changes.
In addition to persimmons, other seasonal foods such as pumpkins, chestnuts, and radishes are often enjoyed. These foods are considered warming, which helps the body adjust to colder weather. For instance, chestnuts are thought to strengthen the kidneys, which is essential for maintaining vitality during winter. Pumpkins are used to promote digestion, and radishes, particularly white radishes, are believed to clear heat from the body. These customs highlight the deep connection between food, health, and nature in Chinese culture.
Beyond food, traditional Chinese medicine places great emphasis on maintaining balance during Frost's Descent. As the air becomes colder and drier, it’s important to keep warm and avoid exposure to cold winds. Ancient wisdom suggests wearing more layers and eating foods that can support the body’s internal warmth. These practices, though centuries old, are still relevant today, especially in rural areas where people live in close connection with the natural environment.
Frost’s Descent also brings significant changes in the natural world. Animals begin their preparations for winter during this time. Migratory birds, such as geese, start flying south to warmer climates, while other animals, like squirrels, gather food for hibernation. In northern China, Frost's Descent often brings the first frosts, with landscapes covered in a silvery layer of frost that reflects the final beauty of autumn. The bare trees, with only a few remaining leaves, remind people of the natural cycles of life--the end of one season and the beginning of another.
While people in the northern parts of China experience colder weather and even frost, in southern regions, the climate remains relatively mild during Frost's Descent. However, the importance of this solar term is universal across China, as it reminds everyone of the need to respect and harmonize with nature. The shorter days and colder nights bring reflection, encouraging people to prepare for the challenges of winter, both physically and mentally.
In summary, Frost’s Descent is a time of transition, marking the final phase of autumn and the approach of winter. It is a period of harvesting, preserving, and preparing both physically and spiritually for the colder days ahead. Through food, health practices, and community customs, Frost’s Descent reflects the deep relationship between humans and the natural world, reminding us to adapt to the changing seasons and respect the cycles of life.
