 小雪 Light Snow

孔垂佑(笃行班)

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Light Snow is the 20th solar term of the year. This is also the second solar term in winter. “Light Snow” reflects climate and other natural phenomena of a season. It is called Light Snow because at that time, it has not yet reached the harsh winter of flying snow, though it is colder over days. Light Snow refers to the time when it starts to snow, mostly in China's northern areas.

The temperature in most areas in the north drops to zero degrees and below. Meanwhile, in the lower and middle reaches of the Yellow River, the average time of the first snow falls during the Light Snow. The snow is light and frozen at night, but melts quickly during the day.

In China, the wind blows from the northeast frequently since the Light Snow. Because it is not bitter yet, many people do not wear hats or scarves. In fact, according to an old Chinese saying, "the head is the place where all passages of the body gather". It is sensible to be ware that one's head can't be frozen.

In the north, there is a saying “If it snows during Light Snow, there will be a good harvest next year.” Light snow now is welcomed in an agricultural country like China. Falling snow can trap and kill pests, while melted snow can provide moisture to soil making sure of a rich harvest nest year.

To farmers, snow is an old friend as it brings good signs. Seeing the snow, they would be confident in next year’s bumper harvest. They would not stop working in the fields to make preparations at the end of the year so as to be more certain about the good harvest next year.

For hundreds of years, Light Snow has lent itself to beautiful poetry and soulful songs. It has become entrenched in daily life too. China is a vast country with a vast territory and abundant resources. Traditional food for this day is rice cake. In ancient times, rice cake is traditional sacrificial offerings. It’s used by farmers to sacrifice for the “God of Ox”. Nowadays, it’s a popular food in south China.

After Light Snow, farmers also start to make preserved meat to eat in the coming Spring Festival. In the past, when storage conditions were poor, people created many ways to store their food. Preserved pork is one of them. Thus even in the bitter winter, the whole family could enjoy meat without going out. Some even say preserved pork tastes better thanfresh meat.
