From far-flung places in our recent Take the Subway series, we move closer to the city center for a look at a few spots that we think, while they may not be on any Beijing top sights lists, are definitely worth going out of your way to visit.
From the China Railway Museum’s branch near Qianmen, we keep things train- and railway- themed with a trek northeast to…

The museum's main exhibition hall is packed with historical locomotives
Officially opened to the public in 2002, the China Railway Museum was essentially established back in the 1950s as part of an exhibition showcasing China’s economic achievements for the 10th anniversary of the PRC.
The now permanent exhibition showcases locomotives and rolling stock from various eras of China’s history, from steam engines with leaders’ portraits at the head to more modern vehicles.

More modern trains, even subway trains, find themselves in the mix
Essentially a train lover’s paradise, one could spend hours getting to know all the locomotives within the museum’s hall, as well as explore inside some trains and cars. Plus, it’s one of the only places where you’ll be able to see trains like the DJJ2 “China Star” – China’s first experimental EMU high speed train – up close and in person.
There’s also a small tour train that’s great for kids and families when the weather is nice.
Entry is RMB 20 for adults and RMB 10 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the museum.
