A hairdresser who goes by the nickname Xiaohua has become an internet sensation simply because she tries to understand what customers want. Since videos of her cutting hair went viral on social media platform Douyin, many tourists have come to her livestreaming sessions to learn her techniques or simply to talk. At peak times, more than 100,000 viewers watch her at once online.
Enthusiastic fans are even coming to visit her shop in Huaihua, Hunan province, to get a haircut. The city received more than 200,000 travelers in seven days, which brought a total of 120 million yuan (16.6 million) in tourism revenue.
Xiaohua, whose real name is Li Jing, first started to put videos on Douyin in February and has since posted around 400. At first, they didn’t attract much attention. But last month, one of her videos suddenly attracted lots of views, as netizens praised her for responding to customers’ needs. Many have invited her to open stores in their hometowns or to give lectures to hairdressers across the country. Her Douyin account now has more than 3.88 million fans and her videos have received more than 11 million likes.
She attributes her popularity to treating her clients as friends and following their instructions when cutting their hair. “For each client, my intention is to cut the hair to the best of my ability and not add things that they do not want or like, and that’s probably the reason that many of my clients come back for me,” she said.
Faced with great popularity, Xiaohua said she does not consider herself a professional hairdresser. She believes there are many more hairdressers who have better skills. She learned to cut hair from her husband, who is also a hairdresser. As long as a person cuts enough hair and makes enough mistakes, they can grasp the techniques, she said.
She mostly cuts hair for male customers and charges 30 yuan ($4) for each haircut. She serves about 30 customers a day and is fully booked through the end of the year. “I am the most common hairdresser. There is nothing unique about me,” she said. “I have not considered raising the price for a haircut because the trust from people is satisfying enough.”
Her WeChat is filled with messages from clients asking for a haircut, and she wants to tell them to be patient and wait until the online fame cools down.
She said she is not worried that one day people may suddenly dislike her haircuts or if she makes a mistake. “I have made lots of mistakes before, so I just want netizens to be more understanding when they happen again,” she said.
