From building block towers taller than skyscrapers to lively storytelling and creating vibrant art, every day is an epic quest for knowledge and fun for Shanghai American School’s pre-kindergarteners. Children are not just taught; they are inspired to be curious, compassionate and courageous explorers of the world. But don’t just take our word for it. Parents of some of our Pre-Ks shared with us their experience of the SAS pre-kindergarten program.

Ms. Sabrina Ye has two children at SAS. Her Grade 6 daughter Elaine joined the school in Grade 1. Her parents saw how SAS helped her come out of her shell – blossoming from shy and unwilling into confident and kind-hearted. They wanted the same for her younger brother, Bryant (currently in Pre-K), and decided to enroll him earlier. Ms. Ye says from the time he enrolled in Pre-K until now, she has seen Bryant grow academically, socially and emotionally.

她父母希望她弟弟Bryant(目前正在上幼儿园)也能这样,于是决定提早让他入学。

“SAS’s pre-kindergarten program teaches young children to explore, perceive and observe nature, and stimulate children’s own desire for knowledge. SAS develops the habit of early reading, as well as children’s sports, music and artistic abilities. SAS also helps children to develop good study and lifestyle habits.”

For Ms. Rachel Zhao, SAS’s Reggio Emilia approach in the pre-kindergarten program is outstanding. She says her two children have developed crucial life skills since joining SAS.

“Our children benefitted tremendously by attending Pre-K at SAS by becoming more independent, confident and social. They have also become more curious and creative thinkers, while also learning teamwork. They love the amazing teachers and facilities, and feel loved and cared for.”

Ms. Jacqueline Ding has two children at SAS. Her older son, Brooklyn, spent his early years in the United States. When the family came to China, Brooklyn’s brother Julian was just two years old. He is now in Pre-K 4. Ms. Ding says she enrolled Julian in SAS’s pre-kindergarten program because she wanted him to have a pure American education like his brother. One of the benefits so far has been the development of Julian’s social emotional skills, she says.

“The Pre-K teachers teach the kids the correct way to deal with all kinds of situations they could encounter in daily social interactions. When Julian first started school, he didn’t know how to deal with conflicts with classmates. His homeroom teacher, Mr. Andrew Bissonnette, taught him how to distinguish between big and small problems, and how to solve them.”

Ms. Yolanda Qian’s daughter, Jennifer, spent both Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 at SAS where she has learnt compassion and empathy. She started Pre-K 3 as an introverted child, but is now helping her classmates, whether it be opening their snack boxes or organizing toys. Ms. Qian says the family also appreciates the strong home and school connection that SAS encourages.

“SAS encourages parents to get deeply involved in our children’s learning experiences and to engage with the staff. This way we are able to learn all the details of our daughter’s school life, from her lunch menu to her reading buddy. We discuss these kinds of topics at the dinner table, which helps keeps our family closely connected.”

Ms. Daisy Shao says she and her husband learned more about SAS when they were college students in the U.S. and were friends with SAS alumni. After getting married, they knew they wanted to send their future children to SAS. When they decided to settle down in Shanghai and had their children, they visited many international schools, but SAS came out as the clear winner.

“In the Pre-K stage, SAS provides a caring and respectful environment for kids, which makes it easier to help them develop independence and confidence. As a sibling, Michelle (now in kindergarten) witnessed her sister growing up as an SAS student since Pre-K, so she has been influenced by the Eagle spirit since she was a baby. She was a shy and quiet girl, but became perseverant, brave, and confident after enrolling in Pre-K at SAS.”

Ms. Wantang Wang says her family appreciates the access to diverse facilities at SAS and the strong sense of community. She witnessed tremendous growth in her daughter, Brenda, who started at SAS in Pre-K 3 and developed a passion for lifelong learning.

“Witnessing older students' passion for learning motivates my daughter and offers a glimpse into her future school life, which I can tell she is quite looking forward to. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly teachers create a supportive environment for both children and families. Whether volunteering at school events or enjoying lunch in the cafeteria, I feel like a valued member of the SAS community.”
