Background
In the past decade, language education has been greatly empowered by the advance of technology. Over time, literacy has transcended traditional paper literacy, moved towards mobile literacy, and is now progressing into the realms of emerging artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) literacies. The evolution of literacy underscores the dynamic nature of learning and adapting to new forms of communication and information consumption (Jeon et al., 2023). AI literacy, as a new form of literacy, presents a novel challenge for language educators and learners. To achieve fluency as digital citizens, embracing AI literacy is poised to become an indispensable component of one’s learning journey (Yang et al., 2024). Understanding and navigating the intricacies of AI literacy will be crucial in future language education.
In view of the significance of AI literacy in language education, this special issue aims to explore and address the pertinent issues surrounding its development. As such, we seek well-articulated and robust research contributions in several key areas, including but not limited to:
Definitions, models, and frameworks of AI literacy in language education
Theoretical/conceptual opportunities in AI literacy in language education
Pedagogical strategies, practices, or challenges for enhancing AI literacy in or outside language classrooms
Development of AI literacy among pre-service / in-service teachers in teacher education
Sociocultural issues (e.g., gender, age, global citizenship) related to AI literacy in language education
Assessment strategies for AI literacy development in language education
This special issue will be of great value to researchers, research students, and practitioners who are interested in leveraging the power of AI in language education. The papers included in this issue will be particularly valuable to language educators, enabling them to ensure effective cultivation of AI literacy in language education. Meanwhile, these studies provide valuable insights into the emerging concept of AI literacy for K-12 and higher education.
