This video will show you how to perform cardiac compressions on a newborn during resuscitation.

This baby is being ventilated with a bag and mask. When indicated, cardiac compressions should commence.

First, find the correct site to do the chest compressions.

Draw an imaginary line across the nipples. Compressions are done just below this line in the midline on the lower third of the sternum.

Both thumbs are positioned on the lower third of the sternum with the tips of your fingers positioned along the spine. Compressions can now commence.

The person doing cardiac compressions will say 1, and 2, and 3, and breathe, 1 and 2, and 3, and breathe.

Compressions are performed on each count, pausing on the breathe command. Each cycle goes for 2 seconds, each compression pushes the sternum down about 1/3 of the AP diameter of the chest.

Alternatively, the two-finger technique uses the index and middle fingers of one hand in the same position on the sternum. The baby must be on a firm flat surface.

Compressions are conducted using the same count as before 1, and two, and three, and breathe, 1, and two, and three, and breathe.
