Guest Speaker:Dr Shang GAO
Dr Shang Gao is an assistant professor and director of the Lacquer Painting Teaching and Research Office, Department of Fine Arts, College of Arts, Xiamen University. He servers as the academic secretary of the Lacquer Painting Art Committee of the China Artists Association. He is a member of the Lacquer Painting Professional Committee of the Xiamen Artists Association.
Shang Gao conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of craft and materials science. His work innovatively integrates various powdered materials into natural lacquer, transforming it from a liquid into a semi-solid, plastic-modified medium akin to oil paint. Through these material explorations, Gao creates three-dimensional lacquer works that reinterpret and reconstruct traditional lacquer techniques, particularly bodiless lacquerware. His approach addresses the challenges of intricate and labor-intensive lacquer processes, aiming to simplify production while introducing more fluidity and innovation. This work fosters the evolution of traditional lacquer art within the context of contemporary material artistry.
Gao holds a bachelor's degree in lacquer art from the Academy of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University and both a master’s and a doctoral degree in craftsmanship from Seoul National University in South Korea. He was awarded the prestigious BKV Prize from the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association in Germany in 2023 and the Young Artist Award from the Cheongju Crafts Biennale Organizing Committee in South Korea. Currently based in the scenic coastal city of Xiamen, Gao serves as an assistant professor at Xiamen University, where he teaches courses on lacquer craft and lacquer painting, and continues to expand his interdisciplinary research and creative practice.
Guest Speaker:Bingqing LIU
Bingqing LIU received her Master’s degree in Print from the Royal College of Art in 2024.She has exhibited at Southwark Park Gallery and the Tsinghua Alumni London Art Exhibition and will be participating in the Woolwich Print Fair in November 2024.
Her creative inspiration comes from the sounds of nature and minimalist, repetitive music. She strives to capture these intangible emotions and memories, revealing the intertwined relationship between order and perception, rationality and emotion within her inner world through repeated lines, delicate colour gradations, and square structures.
Bingqing LIU employs intaglio and etching techniques in her printmaking, using layered printing to achieve the final image. In Flow, Bingqing LIU incorporates Su embroidery for the first time in her work. She discovered that integrating this traditional craft allows her to more profoundly emphasise the connections between personal identity, her hometown environment, historical culture, and childhood memories. The unconscious movements during embroidery also enable her to capture and record spontaneous emotions more freely. The repetitive processes inherent in both techniques have deepened her understanding of traditional methods and meditative contemplation. This also reflects her questioning of the diminished perception in the modern digital world. Through the use of entirely handmade elements, she hopes to rediscover, alongside the audience, the most primal emotions and the purest poetic expression.
