PREFACE

WORKS

Beneath the surface of everyday life lies an infinite number of untouched layers. Since crossing the "Bridge of Kant," the relationship between the self and its surroundings has been in constant flux throughout this ongoing journey. While we seem to have many choices, these choices, like branches of rivers, ultimately flow toward a single direction.
In the creative world of artist Ren Wuliu, he integrates himself as part of the artistic material. Drawing from daily life, he seeks to uncover the essence of things through his perception, observation, and immersion in his environment.Whether these absurd metaphors point to us or reflect back on the artist himself, his works reveal a subtle tension between freedom and intervention in a society governed by rules.
In the exhibition In Submission, Ren employs informal interventions to question deeply entrenched social norms and structures, exposing the struggles and helplessness of individuals within their spaces of existence.Confronted by intangible forces, the numbed compliance of those being intervened upon resembles that of caged creatures. These works aim to forge a connection with those who step into this space. The sculptures, described as "organs without bodies," pose a critical question: What forces are manipulating them?
Text/Liu Lijun
● In Submission starts with the artist’s exploration of human behavior and everyday actions, examining the intricate relationship between individual responses and their social environment. It prompts reflection on the origins of these interventions, as the artist questions: If organs existed without a body, what forces or instructions would govern their every reaction and movement?
The artworks use meticulous bodily language to reveal human reactions and behaviors in various environments. As individuals in a state of intervention, they further uncover the underlying social norms and expectations that drive these actions.

ARTIST
Ren Wuliu
Ren Wuliu holds a master’s degree from the University of the Arts London and a bachelor’s degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. His work primarily focuses on the perception, observation, and integration of individuals within their surroundings. He believes that art and life are mutually transformative, with the key lying in choosing the appropriate forms for intervention and presentation.
Ren Wuliu explores emotional responses within specific contexts, seeking to uncover the essence of things through the absurdities and subtle emotions of daily life, rather than merely depicting social phenomena. Whether guiding us to question deeply ingrained social norms or pointing out our darker human struggles and uncomfortable emotions, he does so with the uncompromising sincerity of a misfit.
