A recent survey by Gleeden, India’s first extramarital dating app, reveals that about 55% of married Indians have been unfaithful to their partners at least once, with 56% of these unfaithful individuals being women. The survey indicates that nearly half of Indians believe it is possible to be in love with two people simultaneously, and 46% think one can cheat on a partner while still loving them. This perspective likely contributes to the readiness of many Indians to forgive their partners for infidelity - 7% would forgive without hesitation, and 40% would do so under extenuating circumstances. Moreover, 69% expect to be forgiven by their partners if caught cheating.

The research was conducted among 1,525 married individuals aged 25 to 50 across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.

Gleeden, which entered the Indian market in April 2017, reported having 800,000 subscribers in the country. Membership surged following the 2018 Supreme Court judgment decriminalizing adultery, which was seen as a progressive move against patriarchy and gender inequality. Despite this, India maintains the lowest divorce rate in the world at 1%, with only 13 out of every 1,000 couples splitting up. Interestingly, 90% of Indian marriages are still arranged by families, and only 5% are love marriages.

The survey also found that 49% of married Indians have had intimate relationships outside their marriage, with nearly half engaging in casual sex (47%) or one-night stands (46%). Indian women appear to be more uninhibited regarding infidelity, with 41% admitting to regular sexual relationships outside their marriage compared to 26% of men. Additionally, 53% of married women and 43% of married men confessed to having had an intimate relationship outside their marriage.

Gleeden’s marketing director, Solene Paillet, noted that Indian women seem particularly open-minded about infidelity, especially when it involves romance. Gleeden offers a virtual environment where users can start new romantic relationships with like-minded individuals without the risks associated with real-life affairs. The platform ensures privacy and discretion, which has been a significant draw for female users. Women appreciate the ability to experience romance while knowing their secrets will remain safe, leading to an increasing number of female subscribers.
