The White House is one of the most secure fortresses in America and the main focus of the secret service, headquartered just a few blocks away.

Every time you drive in through that northwest gate, and the gate closes behind you, there's always a sigh of relief. But before a new president can relax in the White House, the secret service has to get him there.

January 20th, 2009, a record shattering crowd watches Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States, take the oath of office. As history unfolds live, the eyes of America are on the president, but the eyes of the secret service are on the crowd, scanning for the tiniest detail that could signify a threat.

Former agent Daniel Bongino was part of Obama's protective detail for two years. He was a key player in planning the inauguration. This job begins 18 months before the election, as candidate Obama ignites passions for and against. The secret service came in far earlier than they ever had in the past, but then again they never really had somebody with the enormous crowd appeal that senator Obama had.

★★★ inauguration  n.

candidate  n.候选人

★★ ignite  vt.

enormous  a.

appeal  n.

senator  n.参议员

Law enforcement sees a four hundred percent spike in threats against the new president, many of them vicious and racially motivated. One white supremacist's website enlists two thousand new members the day after the election.

★★ spike  n.猛增

★★★ vicious  a.

★★★ supremacist  n.

★★ enlist  vt.

With president Bush the secret service was concerned about a terrorist attack. With president Obama they were more concerned with the threat of a lone gunman who's motivated by racial hatred.

As the inauguration approaches, a credible threat puts everyone on high alert. Some want to cancel, but this two hundred year old American institution must go on.

★★★ inauguration  n.

credible  a.可信的

institution  n.习俗

It'd be great if we could just cordon off the entire area, six blocks off from the White House, throw up a wall. That's it, no one in, no one out unless we say. Well that's not America. That'll never be America

★★★ cordon off  封锁

The inaugural parade will make the ceremonial trip as planned, taking the president the one and a half miles from the capitol to the White House. It's a pretty standard inaugural parade route, but that presents problems, because everybody knows where the president's going to be at that specific time.

ceremonial  a.

★★★ capitol  n.

specific  a.具体的

Almost two million people are expected to gather, the biggest single crowd ever in Washington D.C. And among them intelligence reports say may be a potential assassin.

intelligence  n.情报

★★ assassin  n.刺客

Bongino oversees an area the size of three football fields. With 16 thousand people per city block, he has his work cut out for him. The preparation is meticulous. Bongino's team scours every square inch of a section for bombs weapons, and hiding places for gunmen. Mailboxes are removed, manhole covers are welded shut. The secret service even goes so far as to remove door knobs from rooms overlooking the parade route.

oversee  vt.

★★ meticulous  a.

★★★ scour  vt.

★★★ weld  vt.焊接

door knob  门把手

overlook  vt.

But Bongino is only one part of a massive operation. Thousands of secret service agents move through the crowd. Eight thousand law enforcement officers from across the country, double the usual size of the D.C. police force. More than 12 thousand military personnel are on duty. On every rooftop counter snipers scan the crowd, their rifles accurate to over a thousand yards.

scan  vt.扫描

★★ rifle  n.步枪

accurate  a.精确的

But can this massive force stop an assassin? Communication is key. There's a reason that ear piece has become symbolic of the secret service. It's the most valuable piece of equipment you have. You have to be at a very specific spot at a very specific time, and you're being directed by a supervisor who's like a director of a movie. You have to hear him in that ear piece. It enables you to function and properly protect the president by being in the right place at the right time.

massive  a.

★★ assassin  n.刺客

ear piece  耳机

supervisor  n.监督者

function  v.

The director sits in a multi-agency command center, receiving intel streaming in from satellites and electronic and human intelligence sources. Anything important is immediately relayed to the agents along the parade route.

3:23 PM, the inaugural parade begins. It's game time. For much of the route president Obama and the first family wave to the crowd from behind the armored windows of the brand new presidential limousine, nicknamed the Beast. But the nation wants to see their new leader. 41 minutes after the parade begins, Obama gets out of the limousine. If a lone gunmen is waiting, this is his moment. For the secret service, high alert just got a whole lot higher.

★★ armored  a.

brand new  全新的

★★★ limousine  a.

The agents have to not only guard the president and his family. They also have to protect any innocent bystanders around a potential assassin. If you, God forbid, had to shoot into a crowd of people you better be accurate, and you better know what you're shooting. Accuracy and responsilbility for every single bullet that comes out of that gun has got to be a priority.

innocent  a.

bystander  n.

★★ assassin  n.刺客

accurate  a.精确的

accuracy  n.精确性

bullet  n.子弹

priority  n.
