Last week, our Grade 10 classes wrapped up their poetry unit in Spoken Language 10 with a vibrant and memorable Poetry Café. This culminating activity showcased weeks of creativity, exploration, and hard work as students shared their original poems and celebrated the end of another semester.
在整个单元的学习过程中,同学们研习了多种诗歌形式,包括颂歌、挽歌、自由诗、俳句和藏头诗。他们探寻语言的力量,尝试运用各种文学手法,逐渐形成自己作为创作者的独特风格。诗歌主题丰富多样,有些同学深入挖掘个人内心的深刻主题,而另一些同学则以幽默、自然或体育等为主题进行创作。
Throughout the unit, students studied a range of poetic forms, including odes, elegies, free verse, haikus, and acrostic poems. They explored the power of language, experimented with literary devices, and developed their voices as writers. The topics of the poems were varied; for some, the process involved diving into deeply personal themes, while others embraced humour, nature, or sports as topics of their poetry.

The Poetry Café was set in a cozy, inviting atmosphere, with dim lighting, carefully arranged tables, and an assortment of snacks. This welcoming environment encouraged students to take the spotlight, where they not only performed their poems but also shared the deeper meaning of their work. They explained their inspiration, themes, tones, and poetic techniques, offering insight into their creative processes and connecting with their audience in meaningful ways.
这次活动不仅让同学们展示了创造力,还帮助他们增强了公众演讲的自信,培养了集体意识。这是一种令人愉悦的方式,用以庆祝我们诗歌单元学习的圆满结束,以及高一年级同学们的非凡才华。
This activity not only allowed students to showcase their creativity but also helped build confidence in public speaking and fostered a sense of community. It was an enjoyable way to celebrate the culmination of our poetry unit and the exceptional talent of our Grade 10 students.

The Poetry Café made me achieve a lot. All of us were extremely excited and satisfied with this event. I think it fully embodies the BC curriculum's idea of balancing study and relaxation. It encourages students to communicate actively and speak bravely. At the party, we got the chance to show the poems we wrote on stage. Because there was almost no restriction on the content, we could freely connect our poems with real life or even add our fantastic imaginations. Also, when I enjoyed the great poems from my classmates, my knowledge about English poems was strengthened and consolidated. When I was writing, I kept thinking about the steps to analyze poems and different skills the teacher taught. For instance, when choosing an expression, I thought a lot based on these skills. I deliberated repeatedly on these techniques, striving to find the most suitable way to convey my thoughts. Also, I used some sentences that could show the main idea of the poem better. Through this activity, I really feel that writing poems is a good way to improve my English writing ability. It not only makes me more proficient in using the language but also cultivates my sensitivity and creativity towards language.

My poem is an elegy about friendship, centered around the theme of "parting and treasuring". Although the poem carries a tinge of sadness, it is more about cherishing and being grateful for the wonderful times we've had in the past. At the same time, it expresses my wishes for my friend's future happiness, showing that friendship endures in memory and continues in our hearts. Through writing this poem, I've felt the unique charm of using words to express emotions. During the writing process, memories and blessings related to friendship were gradually organized into paragraphs. This has made me cherish those beautiful moments from the past even more and face the partings and changes in growth with greater ease. Poem-writing is not just an expression; it's also a process of sorting out my inner self, allowing me to have a deeper understanding of emotions. When I read my work at the poetry recital, I felt both nervous and excited. However, the sincere applause and responses from my classmates made me feel extremely warm and touched. While listening to everyone's works, I discovered that each person's emotions were so unique. I was deeply moved by the distinct emotions in every poem. It felt that despite our different experiences, we could resonate with each other through poetry. This event has brought me a lot of touching moments and made me realize the significance of expression and sharing.

我的诗歌是Haiku形式的,我觉得Haiku是一个非常有趣的形式,因为我不仅要考虑如何去描写,还要在符合音节的数量的同时,不能丢弃作为诗歌的美感。我选择的主题是正义女神忒弥斯,她是我在希腊神话中最喜欢的一个人物,她为真理和公平发声。在早期,她的主要形象是一手拿着宝剑、一手持着天平;等到18世纪后,开始出现了蒙眼忒弥斯形象,以此来突出她是以理性来评判。所以我将诗歌的三段内容聚焦于天平、宝剑和蒙着的双眼,突出忒弥斯的无私、公正和洞察。这次诗歌咖啡馆活动,带给了我许多收获:一方面,我通过品鉴同学们的诗歌,更加了解到了每种诗歌不同的格式与特点,体会到了诗歌在不同人们手中绽放出的不同力量,或与哀歌作者一起惋惜、或在颂歌中产生共鸣,它开拓了我的视野,让我有了更多思考的角度;另一方面,我们可以借助诗歌来体会同学的内心情感,在听到深有感触的诗歌时,也可以和身边的同学分享自己的感受,拉进同学间彼此的关系。
My poem is in the Haiku form. I find Haiku a fascinating form because I not only have to consider how to describe something but also need to meet the syllable count requirements without sacrificing the aesthetic of the poem. The theme I chose is Themis, the goddess of justice. She is one of my favorite characters in Greek mythology. She speaks up for truth and fairness. In the early days, her main image was holding a sword in one hand and a balance in the other. After the 18th century, the blindfolded image of Themis began to appear to highlight that she judges with reason. Therefore, the three stanzas of my poem focus on the balance, the sword, and the blindfolded eyes, highlighting Themis's selflessness, fairness, and insight. The Poetry Café has brought me a lot of gains. On the one hand, by appreciating my classmates' poems, I have a better understanding of the different formats and characteristics of each type of poem. I have experienced the different powers that poetry unleashes in the hands of different people. I might lament with the elegiac poets or resonate with the celebratory poems. It has broadened my horizons and given me more perspectives for thinking. On the other hand, we can use poetry to understand the inner feelings of our classmates. When we hear a poem that touches us deeply, we can share our feelings with the classmates around us, thus getting closer to each other.

In the Poetry Café, I presented an ode. It is a poem praising spring and vividly expressing my love for this season. During my participation in this unique event, I was fully immersed in it. My classmates enthusiastically showcased their creative works, and I was fortunate enough to appreciate these distinctive poems. This activity brought me a wealth of emotions, inspirations, and a deeper understanding of the art of poetry. It truly benefited me a lot. I also hope that in future English classes, there can be more interesting teaching activities that allow us to enhance our English proficiency in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.

Last week, as the culmination of our Spoken Language term and poetry unit, students participated in Poetry Café 2025. In preparation for this event, they explored various poetic forms before selecting a poem of their choice to recite. The Poetry Café provided students with a platform to express their thoughts creatively while showcasing their oral English proficiency and storytelling skills. I was particularly impressed by the students’ willingness to share deeply personal experiences, with many choosing to perform elegies that reflected themes of loss and odes celebrating the things that they love in life. Their use of vivid imagery and their understanding of poetic conventions demonstrated the depth of their learning and engagement. Overall, Poetry Café 2025 was a powerful opportunity for students to express emotions, share aspects of their identity, and highlight their impressive creativity and talent. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!
