Abstract:
In both Aristotelian and Confucian traditions, family plays an important role in moral and political education. In this talk, I will first discuss the general ethical-political outlooks of these two traditions, as they both understand human beings as social/political/relational animals. In Confucius, family relation is the foundation of all social and political relations, and filial piety is the root of all moral and political norms. In Aristotle, on the other hand, education starts from the very beginning of a child’s birth, and family provides the essential starting-point of proper moral and political education. To compare these two great thinkers may also have important contemporary relevance.
