Rui Shinohara, a 34-year-old former comedian from Japan, has found unexpected success with his unique "not-so-good-looking-guy-for-rent" service. Launched on July 23, 2020, Shinohara's business caters to women seeking a practice partner for dates or someone to spend time with, charging 10,000 yen (approximately $62) for a two to three-hour session.
The idea for the service came to Shinohara after he struggled to find success in his comedic career. He noticed that while there were numerous rental boyfriend services available, they often featured handsome men, which might not sit well with a woman's actual boyfriend. Sensing an untapped market, Shinohara decided to offer a different kind of companion service.
Despite the initial momentum, Shinohara had to temporarily halt his business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a stint in the Philippines, he returned to Japan and resumed his service. Shinohara's appeal lies in his perceived unattractiveness, which he believes adds a layer of security for his clients.
"Rental boyfriends are often handsome, which might not sit well with a woman's actual boyfriend. In that regard, there’s no way things would develop into cheating with me. It’s precisely because I’m unattractive that I got the request," he explained in an interview with Shueisha Online.
Shinohara’s service has garnered attention for its unconventional approach, offering a non-threatening alternative to the traditional rental boyfriend. His clients appreciate the opportunity to practice their dating skills in a safe environment without the pressure of impressing an attractive partner.
Additionally, Shinohara’s background in comedy helps him put his clients at ease, providing a relaxed and enjoyable experience. "My job is to make my clients feel comfortable and confident," he said. "If they can laugh and have a good time, then I've done my job well."
