China's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outline its climate targets as part of the Paris Agreement. The most recent update, submitted in October 2021, includes five key targets: peaking its carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions before 2030 and reducing carbon intensity (CO₂ emissions per unit of GDP) by over 65% from 2005 levels by 2030.
China has made significant progress in implementing its NDCs through various measures such as optimizing energy mixes and promoting energy efficiency. However, challenges remain, particularly in managing coal consumption and ensuring economic growth aligns with climate goals. The fact is, China's CO2 emissions kept falling until September when record high temperatures caused a jump. The question is: Have China's CO2 emissions peaked already or is there another five years of growth in store before the 2030 peaking deadline?
Under the Paris Agreement, countries are set to update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by February 2025. In anticipation, we will host Lauri Myllyvirta, an expert analyst on China’s emissions, for a lecture and discussion with our audience on November 6th.
