World No. 1 Christa Deguchi now has the only thing missing from her trophy cabinet: an Olympic gold medal. And by defeating world No. 3 Huh Mimi of South Korea in the women's 57-kilogram judo final at Paris 2024, Deguchi achieved her goal of an Olympic gold medal and secured the first gold medal for the Canadian delegation at the Paris Games!
Christa
After a four-minute regulation period in which neither team scored, the game went to prime time aka sudden death overtime. Nearly two minutes into overtime, Christa was penalized for the second time, equaling Huh's two penalties, meaning that if either team was penalized again, the other team would win the gold medal. Less than a minute later, Huh was penalized again for a false attack, and Deguchi won the Olympic title.
Christa advanced to the finals by defeating French star Sarah Leonie Cysique in the semifinals. After four minutes of regulation time in the semifinals, neither team scored and the game went to prime time. After more than four minutes of overtime, Cysique took the third penalty kick of the game and Christa won.
Interestingly, Cysique had defeated another Canadian, Jessica Klimkait, three years ago in the 57kg semifinals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when Klimkait accumulated three penalties. Klimkait ended up winning the bronze medal, the first Olympic medal for Canadian women's judo.
After this Olympic gold medal, Christa has become Canada's most successful female judoka...
Christa
Christa Deguchi was born in Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan. Her father, Tom Taylor, is from Winnipeg, Canada, and her mother, Yukina Deguchi, is Japanese; Tom originally traveled to Japan to teach English, and this cross-country marriage has allowed Christa to grow up in both cultures. Despite being born in Japan, she holds Canadian citizenship thanks to her father. This background set the stage for her later choices.
Christa started practicing Judo at the age of three, and it all started with the advice of a family friend. This Judo teacher suggested that she try martial arts, and at the age of four she had her first fight of her life. The match lasted only four seconds, but she didn't realize it was over and continued to prepare for the fight, which was so adorable that it made her teacher laugh, and he had to smile as he made her stop and bow to her opponent to end the match.
Christa
Although judo was a part of her childhood, Christa did not like the sport. She once told the IJF that she “hated” judo as a child. However, it was this dislike that fueled her resilience. She grew into an accomplished judoka in high school, but felt tremendous pressure due to the importance of judo in Japanese culture. She once mentioned in a 2019 interview, “What should I do if I lose? Will I apologize to the Japanese public for losing?”
Christa
At the age of 16, Christa caught the attention of Judo Canada when she won a junior tournament in France in the 52kg class. Then CEO of Judo Canada, Nicolas ill, a two-time Olympic medalist, convinced Christa to join the Canadian team on several occasions after noticing her exceptional talent. However, Christa refused to join the Canadian team because she was worried that she wouldn't fit in as an outsider, and because of the training conditions in Canada, she chose to continue to compete for Japan.
In 2013, she switched to the 57kg class and won the Japan National Junior Championships. She then won bronze at the World Junior Judo Championships and gold at the Jeju Island Grand Slam. She also won bronze at the Tokyo Grand Slam, defeating world champions Rafaela Silva of Brazil and Miryam Roper of Germany. In 2014, she won silver and bronze medals at the World Championships in Rome, the Japan National Junior Championships, and the World Junior Championships in Florida, USA.
Despite some success in Japan, Christa felt it was difficult to go further in the Japanese Judo scene. after 2014, she was finally convinced by Nicolas Gill to join Team Canada.
However, as she had previously represented Japan, she was unable to immediately represent Canada in international competitions. She had to wait for a two-year international clearing period. During that time, she competed in her last Japanese National Junior Championships and won the bronze medal, as well as four consecutive Japanese University Team Championships with her university team, Yamanashi Gakuin University.
In 2017, she represented Canada for the first time at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, but lost in overtime to Mongolia's Sumiya Dorjsuren. The defeat didn't discourage her, but rather galvanized her to fight even more.
When she first practiced with the Canadian team, Christa, who is Asian, immediately felt a strong culture shock. She noticed that the Canadian female judoka wore make-up and even earrings during practice, as if they were going to a runway show rather than a tournament. This was unthinkable in Japan.
She also found that Canadian coaches do not “reprimand” their athletes like Japanese coaches do, but rather offer suggestions and share ideas with their players in an inclusive manner. Despite the huge cultural differences, Christa was quickly impressed by the warmth and kindness of her Canadian teammates and coaches, and became fully invested in the mentality of playing for Canada.
Christa quickly returned to top form in 2018, winning gold in back-to-back competitions in Portugal, France, the United States and China. That same year, she won bronze at the World Judo Championships, becoming the first Canadian female judoka to medal at the event.
In 2019, Christa is at the pinnacle of her career. She won four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments in Paris, Ekaterinburg, Lima and Montreal. The Montreal tournament was particularly important as it was the first time Canada hosted a Grand Slam judo tournament. That same year, she won the gold medal at the World Judo Championships in Tokyo, becoming the first Canadian to win a gold medal at the event.
Despite not being able to compete at the Tokyo Olympics during the 2020 epidemic, Christa did not give up. She continued to show outstanding athleticism on the international circuit and won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In 2023, she won again at the World Championships, and is well prepared for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Christa had the time of her life at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the 57kg category, she went toe-to-toe with Korea's Mimi Huh, eventually winning the gold medal in overtime on a foul by her opponent. This was not only Canada's first gold medal in judo, but also Canada's first gold at this year's Olympics.
I believe that in the future, Christa will continue to represent Canada in the judo arena in pursuit of higher goals, as well as pass on her story to more people and inspire more young people on their path to success. Christa Deguchi has certainly become a true champion, both in the judo ring and in the arena of life.
Christa's experience is also telling the world that Canada, will always be the same Canada that is open, tolerant, and willing to give all ethnicities a chance to express themselves!
