Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he was left in the care of Mrs. Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a good boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs. Hill was asleep. Kevin sighed (叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye.

Mrs. Hill’s front window faced Mr. and Mrs. Green’s house across the street. The couple had both gone to work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs. Hill’s home phone and called the police.

Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to do something. He rushed out of Mrs. Hill’s house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-down tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding the branch with both hands.

The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father’s watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a floorboard.

At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed (回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran through the house toward the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.

Kevin went back to Mrs. Hill’s house. Somehow he wasn’t sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has told the truth?” he thought to himself. The man’s words sounded pretty convincing.

When Mr. and Mrs. Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. Kevin told them about what had happened, with the man who had barged into their house through an open window. Mr. and Mrs. Green thanked Kevin profusely and vowed to make sure they shut their windows before they leave the house in the future. After all the pleasantries, Kevin decided to also share with the Greens what he can’t get out of his head. Kevin told him about his interaction with the man before the police arrived, and what he had said about a watch. Kevin also pointed out the man seemed to know very specifically where to look – to the exact floorboard. After listening to the story intently, Mr. Green said definitively, as he left to fetch his tools: “Well, why not confirm his story? Let’s see if there is actually a watch under the floor!” Kevin nodded with anticipation, pointing at the floorboard that he saw the man reached before got interrupted. Surprisingly, although the piece looks as if it fit perfectly in the floor, the floorboard came off with little resistance, as if it was by design. Sure enough, in the cavity under the floor there was an intricately crafted wooden box with a glass window that displayed a vintage watch that it held. Mr. Green’s eyes lit up, speaking what Kevin already had in his mind: “Well, why don’t we go bring it to its rightful owner?”
Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station. There, the police led them to the cell holding man in question. Kevin introduced Mr. Green to the man in question, and once he realized that Mr. Green was the current homeowner, the man reached out and acknowledged his wrongdoing in barging into the home uninvited. Mr. Green nodded along in agreement, but with an approachable smile. “I understand, you’re probably just desperately looking for a memento to remember your father with, right?” At this question, the man perked up. His eyes lit up when Mr. Green unveiled to him what he had in his jacket pocket. With tears, the man thanked Mr. Green and Kevin, mentioning that that was the only thing he had left of his father after he had perished on a tragic accident. Having reunited the man with the watch, Mr. Green and Kevin went home with a profound sense of fulfilment, and a heartwarming story to tell Mrs. Hill.

When Mr. and Mrs. Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. The moral conundrum chewed away at Kevin’s heart, pulling on his heartstring left and right as he vividly reiterated the encounter with this stranger. Giving the man’s sincerity a benefit of the doubt, the family took pry open the floorboard to confirm whether the man was telling the truth. “I was hoping to renovate this old floor anyway. Now, we can rest well knowing whether the man is innocent and a new look for our living room.” Then, from the exact piece of wooden board that the stranger tried to excavate, out came a vintage pocket watch.

Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station. Initially, the police mentioned that whether the man had the right to receive the pocket watch, he still needs to be convicted for breaking and entering because the property was no longer under the possession of his father. Nevertheless, Kevin’s parents decided that they would not press any charges on this poor honest man and return to him what was rightfully his. Sometimes, honesty is the best policy.

When Mr. and Mrs. Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. He recounted the story, and Mr. and Mrs. Green praised him for his quick thinking and courageous act. However, they were also intrigued by what the man said. To settle their curiosity, Mr. Green decided to look for the watch. With Kevin’s help, he found the floorboards which the man was prying at, to everyone’s shock, underneath the board lay an old, dusty box, inside was a vintage watch. Upon closer inspection, they found an engraving that read “Justin Smith 1928”.

Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station. When they arrived, an officer was recording a statement with the old man, who looked tired and deflated. Mr. Green presented the watch. “We think there has been a misunderstanding.” At the sight of the watch, the old man’s face lit up with a huge grin “This is exactly what I was looking for! I can even tell you the engraving on the back of the watch.” Turns out, the old man was telling the truth. He had sneaked back to his childhood home to look for the only memento left by his late father. He thanked Kevin and the Greens and apologized for trespassing, “I should have just knocked on the door!”

When Mr. and Mrs. Green got home, Kevin went to talk to them. Mr. and Mrs. Green were also in genuine shock. After checking the house and found nothing was lost, they saw the watch underneath the floorboard that the man was talking about. “This cannot be a simple break in”, said Mr. Green, “There must be a history with this house that we did not know about before we bought the house, perhaps the previous owner did not mention it to us.” Kevin picked up the watch and stared at it, trying to figure out what was special about it. “Maybe we should go to the police station and ask the man himself.” said Kevin.

Kevin and Mr. Green took the watch they had found to the police station.  When the man saw the watch, he suddenly began to cry: “I just wanted that watch, nothing else. It was the only thing that my father left me when he passed away. But I was afraid to ask you directly, so I thought maybe I can break in when you are not home and just take the watch and leave.” As he went on to tell his story, it brought tears to Mr. Green and Kevin as well. In the end, Mr. Green decided to forgive the man and gave the watch to him.
