The Luohu Art Musuem is situated in the core area of the Luohu District in Shenzhen, adjacent to the Luohu "Golden Triangle." It boasts a strategic location for trade and cultural exchange. As an important public cultural institution from the early development of Luohu, it has undergone a transformation after more than a decade of urban evolution. Nestled among skyscrapers in this prime area where land is incredibly valuable, the musuem occupies a precious land resource of approximately 7,700㎡. The primary challenge we face is how to minimize intervention in the site while continuing and amplifying its cultural essence.

The core of Luohu's old city, where mountains and water meet urban space, is a high-density area where public open parks on the ground are invaluable. Over time, the existing site with its plaza, trees, and people have reached a harmonious state, embracing various slices of community life. Whether in the cool mornings or the warm afternoons, the dense trees and level hard ground offer citizens a comfortable space for activities, making it an ideal spot for Luohu residents to relax, cool off, and play.

We value the square and trees in front of the old gallery and have decided to retain and even enhance this direct connection to the "groundedness" We have increased the green space from the original 3,210 ㎡ to 4,530 ㎡ and elevated the new construction above the ground level. This not only liberates the entire ground space for public use but also creates a sheltered area under the eaves, a haven from the sun and rain typical of the hot and rainy southern regions. In this space on the ground, we allow the greenery to spread without bounds, harmoniously connecting with the old gallery while seamlessly integrating with the urban landscape.

Instead of investing resources in flashy designs, it is better to choose an extremely simple form, which saves on construction costs while representing a new generation landmark for Shenzhen with an elegant and confident attitude. The new volume is elevated, inheriting the ground value of the old building, treating the old building and the ground as exhibits, vacuum-preserved and magnified.

The transformation of the art museum faces a new increment approximately 2.5 times the original area, making reasonable functional layouts and optimized circulation the breakthrough point of the project. Faced with the massive addition, we aim to reduce underground excavation and save on construction costs. By reclassifying and redistributing functions based on traffic accessibility, water sensitivity, and privacy, the main exhibition halls and studios are concentrated in the high-rise towers above ground, while parts of the middle-level exhibition halls and parking are arranged in the three underground levels.

By integrating the original underground courtyard of the old museum, we reshape its form and size, creating an efficient connection with the new museum underground. Whether you are exiting the old museum, entering from Nanji Road, or approaching from Chunfeng Road, you will easily find the quickest entrance to the exhibition halls. On the ground level, the combination of the old museum's original corridor and the recessed corridor within the collection storage area creates a seamless, weatherproof connection on the surface.

The sunken courtyard connected to the ground level is arranged with a flexible space for public educational activities. Utilizing the public corridor between the new and old exhibition halls, a clear management boundary is established between the exhibition and public education functions, enabling independent operation of the public education area during non-exhibition business hours. The sunken courtyard with its separate entrance also brings natural light to the underground space.

For the above-ground tower section, leveraging the vertical advantage, we offer a main exhibition space with 8-meter-high ceilings and a side exhibition space with 16-meter-high ceilings, accommodating diverse exhibition formats. The middle exhibition hall below ground has a central height of 8 meters, surrounded by a 4-meter-high circulation corridor that connects to the old exhibition halls, achieving a seamless join and visual interconnection between the new and old exhibition spaces.

The Luohu Art Museum, as a container of art, is like the ancient tool for storing paintings—a beautifully decorated silk-lined box, also known as a brocade box or case. It floats at the end of Chunfeng Road, signifying a haven of art. While in dialogue with the old gallery, it also serves as a three-dimensional art exhibition and community showcase that interacts with the city.

The north wall of the tower is thickened, extending 6 meters towards the old building to create a variable space that accommodates different formats such as commerce, art, and education, forming the 「Art Box」as an artistic showcase. This space is connected through public vertical circulation. The interior walls are composed of glazed colored tiles and glass bricks, abstracting and artistically representing real-life scenes, creating a live show that is ever-changing, as if in dialogue with the old building about the new trends in art in the modern era.

The Luohu「Art Box」 is both an open artistic container and a light-hearted dialogue with the old gallery. Nature and art flow freely inside and outside the venue; the art museum in the early morning still welcomes each citizen who comes for their morning exercise, while the afterglow of the setting sun shines on the「Art Box」of the new gallery. "You look at paintings upstairs, while those who look at you are downstairs." Inside and outside the gallery, and within and beyond the park, we are both spectators and participants in the scene. The rejuvenation of the Luohu Art Museum not only continues the legacy of the old park but also creates new memories.
