CALL FOR PAPERS

The 14th CEA (Europe) and 33rd CEA (UK) 2022 Annual Conference

China’s Dual Circulation: Openness, Technology and Innovation Networks

Co-organizers: CEA Europe/UK, Durham University

Date: 12-13 November 2022

Venue: Hybrid (online, offline)

OVERVIEW

The impact of cross-border innovation on economic development at the macro level and the survival of firms at the micro level has been brought out by escalating trade tensions. There are both political and academic debates on the cross-border activities, such as the co-development of new products, the sharing of intellectual property (IP), human mobility, and the ecosystem that surrounds supply chains. These cross-border developments intertwined with innovation systems in a global context can generate substantial opportunities for and challenges to the integration and diffusion of innovation. Research has investigated the effects of strategies for alliances, alliance diversity and supply chain configurations on innovation processes, as well as openness to collaboration with domestic and international partners and the development of absorptive capacity that can support new product and services development. Another stream of studies focuses on the relationship between internationalisation and learning, and the latter can ultimately increase innovative capabilities. Prior studies have examined cross-border market co-creation, distributed learning, governance, experience, power (im)balances among innovation partners, and varied types of relational ties. Although these findings are evidence that collaboration strengthens the effectiveness of innovation strategies, the context in which cross-border innovation occurs is still in its infancy.

Against this backdrop, this conference focuses on China’s openness, technology and innovation networks. Relevant topics of the submitted papers include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cross-border innovation and economic development

  • Openness, poverty, and social innovation

  • Green product/process innovations and green supply chain management

  • Cross-border innovation in tackling grand challenges

ABOUT CEA

CEA (Europe)

Chinese Economic Association (Europe), CEA (Europe) was launched in 2008 in Oslo. The new association was intended as a major expansion of activities by the CEA (UK) and was established as an independent academic organization in association with the CEA (UK). The main objective of the CEA (Europe) is to promote scholarly exchanges and encourage academic leadership associated with the Chinese economic and business studies in Europe. Since the establishment of the CEA (Europe), five annual conferences in association with the CEA (UK) have been held in various locations in Europe starting with its inaugural conference in 2009 in Dublin, Ireland.

CEA (UK)

The CEA (UK) was launched in 1988 and has since become one of the leading organizations in the UK promoting research on China. Its past annual conferences have attracted wide-ranging attention from academic institutions, government organizations, banks and industries, alongside with the media in the UK and China. Prominent speakers have included ministers from the Chinese and British governments, the Chinese ambassadors, and eminent academic figures of international repute including Nobel laureates in economics. Papers from these conferences have been published in leading economics and business journals, in edited books, and in the CEA (UK)’s official journal, Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies, with Taylor & Francis as the publisher. Since 2001, the CEA (UK) has run parallel annual conferences in the UK and in one of the key universities in China.

ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM

Durham University (legally the University of Durham) is a collegiate public research university in Durham, England, founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837. It was the first recognized university to open in England for more than 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge, and is thus one of the institutions to be described as the third-oldest university in England. As a collegiate university its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and its 17 colleges. In general, the departments perform research and provide teaching to students, while the colleges are responsible for their domestic arrangements and welfare.

Durham consistently places in the top ten in rankings of universities in the United Kingdom. The 2022 Complete University Guide ranks Durham 6th overall, The Guardian University Guide 2022 ranks Durham 5th overall and the 2022 The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide ranks Durham 6th overall. Durham has been placed in the top 100 universities in the world in both the Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings since 2010.
