At the Founding Ceremony of the People’s Republic of China

我就是(中苏联合)摄影队的翻译

I was the escort interpreter for the Sino-Soviet camera team

当然我很光荣我很开心

I felt honored and excited to be there.

开始的时候很安静

At first, it was very quiet,

毛主席上去了

until Chairman Mao ascended the Tian’anmen Rostrum,

就宣布开国典礼

and proclaimed the beginning of the ceremony.

下面“哇”的声音可响了

The audience erupted in cheers.

开国大典彩色影像的传世

The colored footage of the PRC’s Founding Ceremony could be preserved,

离不开吴堉出色的语言能力

in part because of Wu’s unique language performance.

陈毅市长后来见到吴堉都称赞

Chen Yi, then-Mayor of Shanghai, once praised her:

听说你是翻译的一把好手

‘I’ve heard you are a top-notch interpreter!'

吴堉完成这项光荣的任务后

After this glorious task,

成为了躬耕西索教坛的一员

Wu Yu joined the ranks of educators at SISU,

为新中国外语教育事业贡献着“上外之声”

contributing to China’s multi-language education on SISU’s behalf.
