creative project that can be used for storytelling, art displays, and more.
Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to create one.1. Creating the book covers:-Each student will receive
two pieces of cardboard that serve as bookends.- Collect and eyeball-measure papers that
will serve as the front and back covers for your books.- Measure the pieces of paper that will be
the front and back of your books so that they cover the boards. Each piece of
paper should expand more than one cm on each side.- Cut 70-degree angle dog ears on each of
the corners. These will allow the paper to fold over the book covers
seamlessly, not leaving any of the cardboard exposed.- Glue down the
covers. Use a conservative amount of glue, being sure to cover the edges of the
paper that will be folded over. Fold the papers over the covers by gently
pulling with clean hands. Use an object to smooth the edges of the book covers.-
Decorate the covers as desired.-Select along strip of paper that will
serve as your book block. You can join multiple
sheets of paper end-to-end with glue or tape if needed. The height of the paper should not exceed the
height of the book ends (covers).3. Measure
and Mark the Folds:-
Decide how wide each panel of your accordion book will be according to the width of your book covers.-
Use a ruler to measure equal sections along the length of the paper, marking
lightly with a pencil or
using a tool to crease the paper at each interval.-
Start at the middleof the paper strip and make a fold at the first pencil mark.-
Use a bone folder or smooth-edged tool to crease the fold sharply. If you don’t
have a bone folder, you can use the edge of a ruler or even a clean, flat
object like the side of a marker.-
Fold the paper back on itself at the next mark to create a zigzag pattern.-
Continue folding in alternating directions along the marked intervals until the
entire strip is folded.4. Glue
the book block into the covers:-
Attach the first and last panels of your folded paper to the inside of the
covers using glue or double-sided tape.5. Decorate
the Accordion Book:-
Once your book is folded and the covers are attached, you can decorate each
panel and the covers.-
Use markers, stickers, stamps, or any other materials to create your content.-
Be creative! You can use one side for a continuous illustration or story, or
make each panel its own mini-page.-
Ensure all the folds are crisp and the book can stand up when fully opened.-
Let any glue or decorations dry completely before handling the book
extensively.- Photograph and share the meaning or
appearance of your book with your fellow artists.
Artist Introduction:
Jinx Kele is a
conceptual, multimedia artist from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. She earned a BFA
in Fine Arts from Herron School of Art and Design in 2011, focusing on 2D art,
primarily printmaking and drawing. Two weeks after graduating from university,
she moved to China on a whim and has considered it her home ever since. Jinx
ventured briefly to Italy from 2013 to 2015, studying Art Therapy at the
Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Since 2019, she has been working full-time as an
independent artist.Jinx's name is a combination of her childhood nickname and the
Chinese name she was given upon arrival in China, which translates to "can
amuse" and is pronounced [kə-lə]. Jinx is
a synesthete and an environmentalist, as well as an advocate for animal rights.
She has been a vegetarian since childhood.Her intrinsic motivation is to actualize, contribute to, and
demonstrate good nature and beauty, encouraging others in their lives and
creative processes.

“无墙幼儿园”是建立于海口城中村-滨濂新村的社区儿童教育实践项目。项目主要面向常住社区的流动儿童，开展陪伴、教育和家庭建设等工作，特别对一些遇到困境的儿童，进行长期的跟踪及深度工作。但同时，我们对来自任何地方的儿童及其家庭也开放空间和接待服务。项目的工作地点主要以“伴伴杂货铺”、家庭和城市公共空间为主，定期（周末三天）接待和陪伴前来的儿童，并持续开展不同领域和学科的工作坊和教育活动。长期的项目和工作包括：“月亮教育计划”、“无墙公益金”、“儿童图书馆”、“每周放映”、“陪伴机制”、“无墙儿童市集”、“无墙儿童合唱团”、“一日店长”和“无墙儿童艺术节”等。声明：邀请同道者与我们联动、合作，无论你是在当地同建“无墙幼儿园”，或是想为更多儿童提供力所能及的帮助，我们将提供经验分享和方案支持。伴伴杂货铺，2017年创立于海口滨濂新村的一个艺术实践实体空间。这里除了不定期举办一些艺术活动（展览、沙龙、放映、工作坊、驻留等）以外，我们还曾经或正在尝试的社会实践项目和计划有“绿食计划”、“独立电影展映”、“无墙幼儿园”（包括“月亮教育计划”、“无墙儿童市集”、“一日店长”和“无墙儿童艺术节”）等，并且还在持续尝试增加新的项目。
