In 2018, Tang Haoduo and his friends established “The Kindergarten Without Walls”, a nonprofit community art and education space embedded in the urban village environment of Binglianxincun, Haikou, Hainan. Dozens of children from the neighbourhood and the nearby areas came to the kindergarten on Friday nights and weekends. The kindergarten offered a haven for free play and various activities. Through attentive observation of children’s interests and needs, they initiated various educational programs, games, and art activities. Friends from both local and distant communities joined forces in nurturing the kindergarten. Together, they created a caring, accompanying, supportive, and enriching environment where children could thrive and flourish.

Since 2018, the kindergarten has organized many programs and activities. Engaging children, families, voluntary educators, psychotherapists, art practitioners, social workers, and others, the kindergarten initiated two educational plans for children with specific difficulties and needs, which were funded through crowdfunding efforts. Throughout each year, the kindergarten hosted workshops, educational programs, and entertainment activities. They organized weekly film screening “Movie Night,” founded “The Kindergarten without Walls Choir,” held paintings exhibition and published oral poems selections of children and built a “Children's Library”.

Over the past six years, “The Kindergarten Without Walls” has won widespread social and media attention. Major media such as China Daily and The Beijing News covered the stories of kindergarten, Tang Haouduo shared the experience of the kindergarten at “YiXi” speech and presentation event platform. The kindergarten also won the first Child-Friendly Design CFD Award.

Since 2022, the kindergarten has organized an annual event -- “The Kindergarten without Walls Children’s Art Festival”. Each year, the festival presented over thirty projects created by artists and educators together with the children. Additionally, the festival included activities and shows curated entirely by the children themselves. Building on the success of the art festival in previous two years, in 2024, we will organize the 3rd “The Kindergarten without Walls Children’s Art Festival” titled: “Let’s Frolic and Play Games!” Taking a child-centered perspective, we invite creators from various fields from both China and abroad to create an interactive and diverse children’s art festival.

Pan He established the independent bookstore “Roaming Bookshop” in Shenyang, which served as a pivotal node in the network of automatic collectives, anarchists, and socially engaged art practices spanning across Asia. He participated in the “On Practice” tour to the Northeast China in 2016, where he contributed a proposal on negotiating consensus through direct democracy in collective work — an idea later absorbed into the incentive stage of Soeng Joeng Toi. Subsequently, Pan He joined “Theatre 44”, “The Folded Rooms”, and “Transport Interchange” in “Temporary Art Community” project in 2017,” nomadically weaving experiences and contexts across different places such as Shenyang, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. He introduced concepts such as decentralization, rhizomes, comite invisible, and direct democracy to Soeng Joeng Toi, transforming practices by shaping the community’s collective understanding.

Nika Dubrovsky: Play Ground As An Everyday Carnival

The playground is a microcosm of contemporary society, demonstrating its hopes and despair, its behavioral practices and its ways of development.

I plan to create sketches of playgrounds with a group of children as a place where utopia (play) and dystopia (game) are realized, as a microcosm of our desires and fears.

I would like to move away from industry standards to be able to come up with collective and crazy things.

I’m going to try to make stencils that can be sprayed with special sprays of colored crayons that can then be erased, then we could do a collaborative project right on the street, in the square, like we did with David during our Visual Assembly. I will also bring pre-printed sheets of large paper with the questions written in Chinese and start drawing, and we would complete and finish them together with felt-tip pens.

After the workshop we can also take photos of joint works with children, print them as posters and bring them to the exhibition in England.

Becca, Melon, Li Wenhui, and Fan Leyi: Playground without Walls

We plan to create a playground without walls in Haikou, echoing the concept of the kindergarten without walls. The engineering design will utilize simple principles of physics, relying on gravity, wind power, and other non-powered mechanisms. The equipment will incorporate activities that engage the five senses: touch, hearing, sight, vestibular sense, and proprioception, providing space for children's imagination and cooperative play. By introducing games with varying levels of challenge into the community, adults will also find enjoyment in the playground.

Some of the playground facilities will focus on flexibility, making them easy to assemble and disassemble. The "unwalled" theme will be embodied through these components, which function like giant building blocks, unconstrained by space. After the art festival, the main operations of the playground will be handed over to the children of the unwalled kindergarten.

Urban Village Self-built House Investigation Team: Perceive children’s daily living space, objects, and social space

The members of the Urban Village Self-built House Investigation Team (teachers and students) will observe and investigate the children’s activity space, and together with the children of the Kindergarten Without Walls, they will measure and perceive the scale of children’s daily living space and daily objects, discuss the relationship between the scale of living space, object design, social space and children. The team then works with the children to determine the ideal scales of objects according to spaces and objects children want when playing and using and drew the shapes and sizes as children like to complete the children’s own spatial design. The team then make simple operable objects together with the children and put them in the kindergarten.

Sculpting Sound

What is sound? Vibrations of everything in the world. How does sound travel? Sound waves reflect and refract in a medium. In the upcoming workshop, we will use discarded materials in our daily lives to build sculptures that can make sounds. These sculptures come in different shapes and can be struck (percussion), plucked (strings), or blown (winds). Finally, we will hold an exhibition or concert and invite community partners to play together and experience the magic of sound.

Materials: To make the activity more interesting and environmentally friendly, we encourage everyone to use the following common discarded or idle items: express packaging cartons, plastic packaging boxes, metal packaging boxes, takeaway plastic boxes, mineral water bottles, milk tea plastic straws, rubber bands, shells, gravel, coconut shells, etc.

The Shapes of Winds

What shapes are the winds? Use your imagination with children and use brushes and paints to draw the shapes of winds in your mind on a blank Frisbee. On a sunny day, take the “shapes of the winds” and fly them outdoors with everyone, letting them soar in the wind and rhyme with nature.

Frisbee 🥏 The basic way to play is to throw it into the air with force, and when it lands after a period of flight, you or others can catch it with your hands. In every evening when the weather is pleasant, we will all play the Frisbee together.
Every day there will be simple throwing and catching practice and competition time!
Hey, it’s a little different.
What’s the difference?
Unlike running fast Frisbee game, we will walk slowly or fast to catch the Frisbee and pass it to teammates. The key is happiness in playing.

Let’s fly Frisbee!

Artist’s statement

My work focuses on spending time in communities and rethinking ethnographic curiosity as a culture of exchange. Often developed in extended residencies or repeated stays I work with particular communities to understand and depict aspects of their worlds, noting that I am a ‘visitor’, an interlocutor, a documentarian, an interpreter, and a collaborator. As an image-maker I am interested in exploring the relationships and conflicts between landscape and portrait, fiction and documentary, and the choreographed and natural. The themes in my work are drawn from transitional moments, landscape, storytelling, youth culture and how media influences the stories we tell.

Alexandre David: Playable Structures

The work for the children’s festival consists of an immaterial proposition, some sort of instruction or plan that can take multiple shapes depending on the setting and materials used. The idea is to cut out in any type of fabric, soft plastic or large cardboard surfaces the proposed shapes and assemble them in any of the ways outlined in the instructions. Materials can also be combined, and sizes are variable. Therefore, scarcity of appropriate materials shouldn’t be a problem, as there are no specific materials to be used and the quantity of materials used is relative to size, which is flexible to a certain extent (it’s nevertheless always relative to body size). Assembled, these soft shapes should be combined to existing spaces and objects to form of protective tent-like space, that can be used by children and adults alike. Any one of these spaces, depending on the combination used, will lie somewhere between a tent and a coat, a blanket and a parasol.

This project aims to function as some sort of skin whose shape will depend on what it covers. As a child I would pull a sheet over chairs and a table to make protective shelters and years later, I’m more or less doing the same thing. This project is a variation on such activities: A sheet-like structure made to be pulled over anything, fixed to anything around to create some sort of space children and adults as well can momentarily occupy and put to whatever use they wish.

Artist introduction

Alexandre David’s site-specific installations and interventions in public spaces always relate to architecture: through their structural simplicity, often revolving around a vocabulary of ramps, passages, platforms, tables, and benches, his pieces are explorations of the form and function of the built environment and are grounded in the relationship between visual experience and use. There is a familiarity, both in the materials and in the forms, which incites physical engagement and active participation.

Yam Lau: Children’s Currency

The project attempts to develop a currency to be issued by the Kindergarten Without Walls. It begins by observing the various activities in and around the kindergarten. By investigating the forms of life, modes of play and resilience forged by the children, the project proposes that affective exchanges between children can provide a unique model for minting a tradable currency with a different logic from money. Hence, the proposed currency, provisionally termed 童钱, reflects the collective character of the kindergarten; its circulation serves as an emblem of its identity and autonomy.

童钱, is a term that explicitly references old Chinese coins 铜钱. Both 童钱 and 铜錢 share the same pronunciation and design. However, unlike its old bronze counterpart, 童钱 will be “minted” in playful, bright colours to denote different values. They can be strung together and worn as a bracelet, an object of pride. The project also delves into the relationship between coins and divination systems, as 铜钱 is commonly used to generate the oracles of I Ching. This dual function of coins, both as a currency and a divination tool, is echoed across cultures, such as the use of seashells in Africa. The project aims to bridge these cultural connections through the proposed currency, adding a layer of depth and meaning to its creation.

In addition to the fabrication of 童钱coins, the project is dedicated to establishing the practicality and adoption of the coins. This includes how the coins can be used as a medium of trade in venues and activities associated with the Kindergarten without Walls, such as the convenience store (the headquarters of the kindergarten), the children’s market, the fundraiser, etc. The project ensures that the proposed currency is not just a concept but a practical and functional tool.

Hu Jiamin: Animal Videos

Among the immense flow of online short videos, animals (mostly pets, like cats) have become one of the most consumed objects. As Radha O’Meara points out: “The lack of inhibition of cats in online videos means that we can exercise the power of surveillance without confronting the oppression this implies. Cat videos offer the illusion of watching the other without disturbing it, brandishing the weapon without acknowledging the violence of its impact.” Children are naturally attracted and fascinated by animals; however, their ways of seeing and perceiving animals are being shaped and alienated by the manipulative way of online short videos. I have been constantly filming and recording animals and I have tried to edit these materials into something that is close to short films or video works (in a more conventional sense), contrary to the popular narrative of online short videos. These videos allow children to watch these animals in a more equal, simple, and imaginative way.

Hu Jiamin grew up in Yichang, China by the Yangtze River. After graduating in biology, he worked in an artist residence in the countryside of Yunnan from 2007 to 2009. His experiences in rural China profoundly influenced his sense of artists’ social responsibility. In 2010, he returned to the city, where his work continued to evolve, enriched by the cultural resources at hand and his encounters with the social complexities of metropolitan life. He has lived and worked in Lyon, France since 2016.

Artist’s statement

My work probes the way the materiality of painting questions and defies the virtualization of the images that inundate our lives. The integration of other mediums in my work seeks to incite our eyes to be reflexive on the things that sculpt our relation to reality.

My work expresses the way globalised history incarnates itself in our existences, depicting the tension between the simplicity and fragility of everyday life and the inexorability of the historical forces that underlie it.

As a Chinese artist exiled in France, I explore the question of memory in the context of the erosion of our relation to the past; at the same time, my work also questions Western societies’ relation to their memory in the way it is obstructed by the spectacularization of our time and the desensitization of our gazes. In my eyes, figurative painting becomes a weapon to assert the materiality of reality and the impossibility to remain in the abstraction of timelessness, thus challenging the virtualization of our time and the evasion from collective emotionality.

My exploration of the materiality of painting tends toward universality through the experimentation of the confrontation and the penetration of abstract and figurative representations as well as Western and Chinese aesthetics.

Red and round -- is it an apple? Maybe.
(But it could also be part of a giant cherry.)
Swish, swish, swish -- is it the sound of the waves? Maybe.
(But it could also be the wind shaking a big blue tree.)
Bloup! Bloup!  Bloup! -- What are these strange creatures and sounds? ...
Have you ever tried to describe some indescribable thing? In the “Bloup! Bloup!  Bloup! Poetry Workshop”, we will try to do this impossible thing together. With the help of a variety of props, picture books, and cooperation with other artists or projects, we invite children from the Kindergarten Without Walls to experience all kinds of weird sounds and perceptions and make up endless nonsensical stories. In order to answer “What is this”, you must forget all the rules and regulations, invent and use the freshest language and feelings -- taking this step, you can create interesting poems that belong to you in a natural tone. In the end, everyone who participates will also create a poem together.

Lhamo Yue Liu and Lilin: The Kindergarten Without Walls Tabloid

We will form The Kindergarten Without Walls Tabloid editorial team, where everyone can imagine or recall stories about animals. Friends can choose to participate in many ways: “Editors” can interview and collect people’s experiences/imaginations/dreams about animals... “Painters” can draw companion animals/stray animals, or design living spaces for stray animals. “Authors” can describe animals at home/animals outside. We are particularly concerned about the possibility of various dynamic interactions in multi-species relationships between children and animals and expect surprises to emerge during our collective explorations. Everyone in The Kindergarten Without Walls Tabloid edits animal-related content together, working in teams, writing, imagining, and using simple manual techniques such as printmaking, paper cutting, hollow painting, and comics to produce a small publication with a circulation that matches the number of participants.

Dong Jie: Toys Factory

“Toys Factory” is a project created by artist Dong Jie in 2022. It is inspired by a principle of psychology: real touch has a healing effect on emotions. She designed an interactive game. The background of the game is set 100 years in the future. The environment in which people live is completely replaced by virtual technologies such as AR and VR, real touch is absent. Production and lifestyles are meaningless repetitive actions, and people cannot generate emotions. Therefore, they need to travel through the time tunnel back to the modern era and seek help from modern people. The task of this game is to use materials with different textures that bring different touches to create toys that activate future human emotions. Put materials of various textures on an interactive game table. After the audience understands the game tasks by watching a video introducing the background story, they can pick up these materials to make toys that activate emotions. The production process itself is a process for them to connect with their emotions and see themselves.

Origin

Occupy the Rooftop:

The rooftop of an urban village was converted into a tin house for rent by the landlord, and the plants planted on the rooftop were forced to be relocated. Among them, the leaves of the lemongrass (Cymbopogon) were cut off and made into lemongrass ginger tea and lemongrass brown sugar water for the friends who participated in the workshop. The roots of the lemongrass were washed and soaked in water, and the participants and their friends took them home. The occupation of the rooftop seemed to have failed, but the spirit of occupying movement took root everywhere with the lemongrass. “The World Kitchen” was born from here.

Recipes of the School of Baku:
On the “World Baku Day” in 2024, we celebrated the endangered animal “Baku”. In addition to mask-making workshops and improvisational drama, we also cooked a meal for Bakus. This was an attempt by the “World Kitchen” to break through the human-centered approach and to make a meal for an absent animal. Participants discussed the dietary preferences of Bakus in reality and told ancient legends of Bakus, such as eating dreams or heavy metals. In the end, adults and children jointly created the “Recipes of the School of Baku” prints, and another partner made vegan meatballs for Bakus using kitchen leftovers.

Ake, Zijin: Word Game

#Workshop #Right to Speak #Game
Let’s create our own words!
How to write, how to pronounce…how to express myself, all up to me!
Throw away those language systems and create your own words~~~~

We will prepare some existing words and invite children to disassemble them at the festival site. Everyone can reassemble the disassembled word structure into new words according to their own feelings. Next, we can give these new words pronunciation and meaning, use them to form words and sentences, and even compose prose and poems. Depending on the situation on site, there may be other improvisational games! This workshop still has the potentiality of not being defined.

A poem written by a child from the Children's Palace

A Poem

Chen Yanpei, 11 years old
What is poetry?
In his eyes, poetry expresses emotions.
In its eyes, poetry is smart.
But in our eyes...
Poetry is an evil person.
She always makes us recite.
Poetry hurts us.

Can poetry stop existing in the world?

Collaborating with the “Children's Oral Poetry” from “The Kindergarten Without Walls”, I will organize a children’s poetry and art exhibition focusing on the theme of “Dialogues between Mountains and Seas”. I will invite the children to read each other’s poems, and then handwrite messages based on the poems, or use their imagination to create illustrations for the poems. They can also add small illustration elements to the cardboard printed with poems.

Chen Xiaohua is a rural Chinese language teacher in a primary school. She has been teaching for 6 years and trying to expand the boundaries of rural aesthetic education. She established the “Pastoral Children’s Poetry Class” and “Flower Theater” for children.

The “Pastoral Children’s Poetry Class” is a small children’s poetry creation community in a mountain village school in Hainan. Due to their dialects and life experiences, the children in the mountain village had limited Han-Chinese language expression ability. But I found that the children have wonderful perspectives and genuine sensibilities of words, they are natural poets. Outside the classroom, I led the children to the school playground and vegetable garden, and looked at the sky, trees, flowers, and clouds on the green grass; observed, thought, daydreamed, wrote... and recorded those beautiful things and feelings that are easily overlooked. The children said that we are like little pastoral poets! The “Pastoral Children’s Poetry Class” came from this. Through writing poems, the children of the “Pastoral Children’s Poetry Class” paid attention to nature, life, and self-feelings. They expressed their experiences and feelings in short words. These words are natural and undecorated, but they reflect the children’s colorful inner world. (Teacher Xiaohua)

Mole: Mole Chess “Epidemic Record”

The epidemic came, quarantine came, nucleic acid came, the magic flute came, and many problems came together. Facing a wife who got drunk every day and stayed out all night, and a son who sang and indulged in games every day, you, as the backbone of the family, were unfortunately infected with the virus. What should you do about your depression and mental tension? Could you make yourself strong and cheer up again? Or let yourself be drawn into the whirlpool of madness step by step?

The mole chess “Epidemic Record” is a chess game in the “Mole’s Games” series. The background story of the game was taken from a short story written by Mole during the epidemic.

The rules of mole chess are similar to those of chess, except that the chess pieces are mostly common professions in daily life, such as police, teachers, officials, and ordinary citizens, etc.; as well as public chess pieces with supernatural powers such as the Pied Piper and the Grim Reaper. In addition, each chess piece has specific skills that need to be released by shaking the corresponding dice points. In this game, all you have to do is to infect all the citizens on the other side with the virus; or take away all the children in the other city like the Pied Piper. And Ye, the protagonist of the game you are going to play, is an ordinary citizen, but he hides a huge power that fluctuates the overall situation...

Now --

it's your turn to roll the dice.

Dun Dun: Playing with Beads

hello!

Hello! Hello, kids!
I would like to invite you to play beads this summer🥳! I remember one summer when I was a kid, I played beads with my neighbor’s sister. We chatted and looked at each other’s beads. Sometimes we would not talk, just string beads quietly, and occasionally the wind from outside would blow in from the window. Even now, it is a memorable and wonderful summer vacation.
This time I will go to Hainan with a bead treasure box to play with you! I will share beads with you. Of course, if you have anything you want to string, such as treasured treasures, fun things picked up on the road, a fallen leaf... you can also string them in!
The things you string can also be given to yourself, or to someone you want to give it to, to a beloved doll, or as a commemoration of an event. Whatever you think of, come and try it. Looking forward to meeting you and playing together😆

Pang Boren: Making Bamboo Water Cannon

The end of nostalgia is to transfer. As one of the post-80s generation, most of the toys we had in our childhood were homemade, such as trucks woven from pandanus leaves, slingshots made from bicycle inner tubes, blowguns made from bamboo, etc. The most exciting thing was water fights! Yes, water cannon guns made from bamboo tubes, wooden sticks and rag strips. Water fights were one of the most enjoyable activities during our summer vacation. Let nostalgia be secretly transferred to the alleys of this urban village!

What are your most familiar places in Binlian New Village? We would like to invite the children living here, using cameras to lead us into your living places -- home, school, store, place to play games, friend’s home, favorite place... Everyone can create their own exclusive route! Arrive at each place, take a photo of it first, and then think carefully, what impressive things have happened here? Recreate the scene at that time and take a group photo. After walking around, print out the photos, cut and paste them, and make your own community photo map.
