Foreigner's Privacy Leak Sparks Debate on Data Protection

Recently, the privacy of a foreign model was leaked by an airport security officer at Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport, which attracted widespread attention from netizens.
 Incident Review
Zhang Zan (pseudonym), a modelling agent, posted on social media on September 26 that after a foreign model flew from Shanghai to Guangzhou on 25 September, someone used the security photo to find his WeChat and ask for the model's contact details. He noted that while models often face harassment, this was the first case he had come across involving airport security photos.
When reporters contacted Juneyao Airlines about the situation, a customer service representative said they were unaware of the incident and would need to report it for verification. Upon further inquiry with Hongqiao Airport’s complaint hotline, the staff confirmed the incident, and explained that the security department through the public opinion monitoring to see netizens posting, after an internal meeting to inform the feedback has been given to Mr Zhang, the staff involved in the incident will be dismissed. At the same time, the staff pointed out that the security department staff used a private number to contact the passenger's work behaviour is not very strict.
Discussion on Privacy Breaches
The incident highlights serious concerns regarding personal information leaks. Firstly, how did someone obtain the booking phone number, which is typically only accessible to the ticket purchaser? Secondly, the unauthorized acquisition of a security photo raises questions about data protection protocols. Reports indicate the affected individual is a foreign model whose contact information was sought by someone impressed by her at the airport.
Online commenters have expressed outrage, stating that security personnel are neglecting passenger privacy and that such breaches are unacceptable. The Personal Information Protection Law prohibits any organization or individual from illegally collecting, using, processing, transmitting, or selling personal information. The Civil Code recognizes the right to privacy as a fundamental personal right, protecting individuals from intrusion or unauthorized disclosure.
The act of leaking personal information has become a public concern, leading to widespread frustration. Some users shared their experiences of receiving spam calls shortly after registering their phone numbers for various services, highlighting a systemic issue where personal data is easily compromised.
With accountability now established for the leak of the security photo, it is crucial to investigate how the model's booking phone number was also compromised. The repeated occurrence of personal information leaks underscores significant gaps in data management practices. Strengthening data protection measures and establishing rigorous privacy protocols are essential to minimize the risks of future breaches.
