After Ban Lift, Many China-Bound Flights Reportedly Canceled

  Following the lift of Canada's flight ban, reports have emerged of widespread cancellations of China-bound flights. 

  On October 28, 2024, Transport Canada announced the removal of restrictions on flights operated by Chinese airlines, marking a significant step toward normalizing air travel between China and Canada. However, as airlines on both sides began restoring direct flights, reports surfaced online about widespread cancellations of December flights, causing uncertainty for travelers.

  • Increasing Flights Between China and Canada

  China’s aviation regulator had previously announced plans to increase flight frequencies starting October 30, with at least five airlines connecting major Canadian cities such as Toronto and Vancouver with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
  Air Canada, headquartered in Montreal, shared its plans to ramp up operations. The airline stated it would increase the frequency of its Vancouver-Shanghai flights from four times a week to daily starting December 7. Additionally, it plans to resume daily Vancouver-Beijing flights from January 15.

  • Reports of December Flight Cancellations

  Despite these optimistic announcements, many travelers have reported unexpected disruptions. Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints from Toronto passengers about the sudden cancellation of China Southern Airlines' direct flights to Guangzhou. One notable example is flight CZ312, originally scheduled to depart Toronto for Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on December 23, which was canceled due to “company planning.”
  Passengers affected by these cancellations expressed frustration:
  “My December 22 flight was canceled, and I had to switch to a Cathay Pacific flight on the same day.”
  “My December 15 flight got canceled, and I’m still trying to rebook for a nearby date.”
  “Even my parents’ flight from Guangzhou to Toronto was canceled.”
  Some travelers noted that their return flights were delayed by several days, while others mentioned automatic rebooking by airlines as a partial resolution.

  • “Daily Flights” May Face Delays

  The much-anticipated “daily flights” between Canada and China may not materialize as planned. According to searches on Google Flights, Air Canada’s Vancouver-Beijing flights (AC29) scheduled to resume on January 5 face sporadic cancellations until April. Specific dates in January, February, and March—such as January 8, 9, 12, 22, and 29—are unavailable for booking, as are numerous flights on Wednesdays in February and selected dates in March.

  • Similar Cancellation Issues

  Similar cancellation issues have also been reported on flights to Australia and New Zealand. China Southern Airlines is rumored to have canceled a significant number of flights to both destinations, though the airline has yet to provide an official explanation. This has sparked concern among passengers planning international trips during the peak holiday season.

  These developments highlight the importance of staying informed about flight schedules. Travelers are advised to check airline updates and monitor their flight status to avoid unexpected changes to their travel plans.
