Don’t Let Others See Your Chats: Clear These WeChat Folders

  Have you ever logged into WeChat on a public computer?
  A recent post by a tech blogger has sparked concerns about privacy risks. Many users assume that simply logging out of WeChat is enough to protect their data. However, chat images, videos, and files may still leave traces on the computer. This is because WeChat's PC version automatically caches chat records in the local file directory. Anyone who accesses these folders can view certain chat content without needing to log into your WeChat account.
  The blogger also shared tips on clearing cached WeChat data and issued a warning: deleting chat records is irreversible. Once deleted, they cannot be recovered. However, this action does not affect records stored on your mobile device, as chat histories on computers and phones are stored independently.
  • How to Clear Cached WeChat Data on Public Computers
  If you've used WeChat on a public computer, follow these steps to safeguard your privacy:
  1. Open Settings in the WeChat app.

2.Navigate to Manage Files → Open Folder → FileStorage.
3.Review the key folders storing your WeChat data: 
  (1)Cache: Contains cached data.
  (2)File: Stores sent and received documents, such as files and compressed packages.
  (3)CustomEmotion: Holds your custom emoji.
  (4)Video: Contains videos shared via WeChat.
  To protect your privacy, check these folders and delete any personal content, such as photos or videos, after using a public computer.
  • For Complete Privacy Protection
  For a more thorough cleanup, delete the entire WeChat data directory. Look for the WeChat Files folder in the root directory of the app. Inside, you'll find subfolders named with "wxid_" prefixes, each corresponding to a logged-in WeChat account. Deleting these folders removes all associated data from the computer.
  These steps can help you minimize the risk of sensitive information being exposed when using WeChat on public devices.
