The Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invite applications for postdoctoral appointments in the theory of quantum computation and quantum information science. The term of appointment is up to two years with the possibility to extend upon mutual agreement. Appointments are expected to start in Fall 2025, but an earlier or later start date may be negotiated.
Successful candidates will engage in cutting-edge research in various areas of the quantum sciences. The position is theory-focused but can also collaborate with experiments. Research topics may include, but are not limited to:
Quantum algorithms and complexity theory
Quantum architectures, compilation, and scalable quantum systems
Quantum error correction
Quantum machine learning, AI for quantum many-body physics and quantum information science
Quantum communication, networking, and cryptography
Characterization and simulation of quantum systems
Application of quantum information to physics, chemistry, and materials science
The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with UCLA faculty members including: Leo Zhou, Di Luo, Hanrui Wang, Prineha Narang, Ryan Thorngren, Louis Bouchard, Jason Cong, Lara Dolecek, Mark Gyure, Jens Palsberg, Vwani Roychowdhury, Kang Wang, and Chee Wei Wong. Candidates should describe in their research statement opportunities for collaboration with one or multiple faculty at UCLA.
Application Process:
The candidate should submit the following materials:
Cover letter
Curriculum vitae, including a list of publications
Research statement (maximum 2 pages); must discuss potential collaborations with one or more UCLA faculty
Three reference letters
To be eligible, the candidate must have (or should expect to receive by their start date) a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field. The candidate should have a strong track record of research excellence, as demonstrated by publications in top-tier journals or conferences. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For full consideration, please submit your application by December 1, 2024.
Additional Information:
UCLA is home to several institutes and centers that support research in quantum science. This includes the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering (CQSE), established in 2018 to coordinate research and teaching activities. The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) provides advanced nanotechnology infrastructure and expertise for research in quantum materials and quantum optics. The Challenge Institute for Quantum Computation (CIQC) is partly centered at UCLA and addresses fundamental challenges to developing quantum computers. The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA, one of the six NSF math institutes, has also sponsored programs in quantum computing research.
Furthermore, UCLA has recently invested $500M in a new 700,000-square-foot UCLA Research Park, which will partly house a new Quantum Innovation Hub. The new hub will bring together faculty members and researchers from UCLA and other institutions, government and industry partners, leading startups, and students in a collective, multidisciplinary effort to advance the state of quantum science and technology. Candidates will have opportunities to collaborate with experimentalists, leveraging access to the full span of leading-edge entanglement, qubits, metrology and quantum testbeds at UCLA. This includes trapped ions, superconducting qubits, silicon spin qubits, solid-state quantum memories, high-dimensional noise-resilient quantum networks, multi-node entanglement distribution, fundamental and distributed quantum sensing at the thermodynamic and quantum noise limits, and precision measurements at UCLA.
The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
