XJTU is a comprehensive research university specializing in science and technology. It has 44,325 full-time students, including 20,958 undergraduates, majoring in science, technology, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy and arts. There are 90 undergraduate programs, eight national-level disciplines, five state key laboratories, seven national engineering (technology) research centers, three national engineering laboratories, and five national bases for international science and technology cooperation. It has won 78 national teaching awards, and launched 35 national courses, 23 national resource sharing courses, and 11 national open courses. With eight national teaching (talent training) bases, nine national teaching teams, and 12 national experimental teaching demonstration centers (including virtual simulation experimental teaching centers), the university has cultivated more than 280,000 students over the last 65 years, greatly contributing to development of western China.
In recent years, focusing on the concept of "conduct training, knowledge teaching, ability training, and thinking innovation", the university has promoted a talent training mode composed of general education and professional education covering bachelor, master, and doctoral programs.
XJTU has restructured its program of talents training, guided students to make their own decisions in choosing majors, and gradually implemented a full credit system. Since the 13th Five-year Plan (2016-2020), 40 undergraduate majors and 78 courses of XJTU have been affirmed to be first class at the national level, and 11 national teaching awards have been achieved. XJTU was the first university to pass the evaluation of undergraduate teaching in 1996, and was rated as a university with an excellent learning atmosphere in the 2017 evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education.
