Dr. Liuling Yan serves as Regents Professor and endowed Dillon and Lois Hodges Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Prior to joining OSU in 2006, he pursued his postdoctoral research and served as a project scientist at the University of California in Davis, where he cloned three vernalization genes, VRN1 (Yan et al. 2003, PNAS), VRN2 (Yan et al. 2004, Science), and VRN3 (Yan et al. 2006, PNAS, a cover story). At OSU, Dr. Yan has mapped and cloned genes in numerous traits, including winter wheat vernalization requirement duration, resistance against diseases and insects, nitrogen use efficiency, etc. In recent four years, the Yan lab cloned mDES1 as a semi-dominant NLR allele that causes whole-seedling necrosis in wheat (Plant Physiology, 2021), TaOGT1 that regulates the flowering time of winter wheat cultivars (Nature Communications, 2021), and TaCol-B5 that enhances field-based grain yield (Science, 2022). The cloned genes and identified alleles in the Yan lab have been delivered into 26 new wheat varieties released by the Oklahoma Wheat Improvement Team.
