Indeed, conciliating a local and a global reference increases both its accuracy in describing geographical concentration, and the computational intensity required for its application to large areas, such as entire regions or countries. Our proposed solution is very simple and – despite looking somehow contradictory – also very solid, both conceptually and empirically.
First, we propose a conceptual explanation of why the approximation of exact geographical locations to pre-determined geographical units does not constitute a breech of distance methods’ assumptions, at least in the way they are commonly implemented. Then, we show a real-case application of such short-range approximation, which produces almost undistinguishable results but allows for a far quicker and manageable computation.Bio:Dr. Alberto Tidu is a post-doc researcher at the University of Cagliari, where he completed a PhD in Economics with a dissertation focusing on the agglomeration and dispersion of various industries within the Italian economy, particularly examining their dynamics throughout the Great Recession.
