近日，部分媒体在各个渠道传出“美国留学生寒假不能回国，回国就回不来了，美国多所大学发出警告！”这样的消息。很多学生和家长就此问题表示担心，考虑到不少同学已经开始规划寒假计划，秉持着GRE强调的“批判性思维”，这篇文章给大家还原一下传闻的“来龙去脉”，以及寒假我们应该如何准备。
下面我们针对网传的“通知”，来看看到底事实是什么情况。

事实：假期旅行建议为尽量在2025年1月20日总统就职日前返回美国。

The Office of Global Affairs (formerly the International Programs Office) recommends that our UMass Amherst international community-- including all international students, scholars, faculty and staff under UMass immigration sponsorship-- strongly consider returning to the United States prior to the presidential inauguration day of January 20, 2025 if they are planning on traveling internationally during the winter holiday break. Please note this is not a requirement or mandate from UMass, nor is it based on any current U.S. government policy or recommendation.
1、是建议而非强制：假期旅行建议：在计划寒假期间出国旅行时，尽量在2025年1月20日总统就职日前返回美国。请注意，这不是UMass的强制要求或规定，也不是基于当前美国政府的政策或建议。
However, given that a new presidential administration can enact new policies on their first day in office (January 20), and based on previous experience with travel bans that were enacted in the first Trump Administration in 2017, the Office of Global Affairs is making this advisory out of an abundance of caution to hopefully prevent any possible travel disruption to members of our international community.
We are not able to speculate on what a travel ban will look like if enacted, nor can we speculate on what particular countries or regions of the world may or may not be affected.

A travel ban is likely to go into effect soon after inauguration. The ban is likely to include citizens of the countries targeted in the first Trump administration: Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Myanmar, Sudan, Tanzania, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia. New countries could be added to this list, particularly China and India. International students and scholars from outside of these “areas of concern” are not likely to be affected by a travel ban or targeted visa suspension. People who are not citizens of these countries but are in transit through them to the U.S. are unlikely to be affected.

It is a good idea for international students, faculty, and staff from the above countries to be back in Ithaca in advance of the semester, which begins January 21, 2025. If this is not possible (e.g., for scheduled fieldwork), communicate with an advisor about your travel plans and be prepared for delays.

Upon entering the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection may ask for more evidence of your connection to Cornell. For that reason, carry all of your documents (students/scholars), ensure that they are up to date, and bring additional paperwork demonstrating your purpose at Cornell (evidence of funding and certificate of enrollment or transcript).
3、回国入境注意事项：入境美国时，美国海关和边境保护局可能会要求更多与康奈尔大学相关的证明材料。因此，请携带所有必要文件（如学生或学者证件），确保文件更新，并带上能证明您在康奈尔大学身份的补充文件（如资金证明、注册证明或成绩单）。
Only Congress can change visa categories such as asylum, Optional Practical Training, and green card categories. No change is expected in the short term.
4、短期内政策变动有限：只有国会才能改变签证类别，如庇护、OPT（选择性实习训练计划）和绿卡类别。短期内预计不会发生变化。
President-elect Trump has indicated that mass deportations could begin soon after he takes office. These are likely to focus initially on people with final orders of deportation. Mass deportations are also likely to be challenged in the courts and to take longer than promised.

With results of the U.S. presidential and congressional elections confirmed, we want to share important information for those in our community who hold re-entry visas, including international students, visiting scholars, faculty, researchers, and staff. We are encouraging members of the Northeastern community to be proactive with international travel plans during the upcoming months.
1、鼓励成员关注出国旅行：随着美国总统和国会选举结果的确认，我们希望为持有返美签证的社区成员（包括国际学生、访问学者、教职员工和研究人员）提供一些重要信息。我们鼓励东北大学的成员在接下来的几个月内对国际旅行计划采取积极主动的态度。
To minimize potential disruption to your studies, work, or research, we strongly recommend returning to the U.S. no later than January 6, 2025, the start of Northeastern’s Winter/Spring academic term. This will allow you to be present on campus before possible restrictions take effect.

在美国就读的留学生寒假可以回国，但要做好充分的准备，同时关注学校具体的通知。
①可以回国，但最好在1月20号特朗普任职之前
其实通过大学官网的用词我们可以看到：Could be；Encourage，Advise，Not Requirement；Not Mandatory其实更多表达了学校的谨慎考虑，而非命令要求。甚至我个人觉得这些学校有些“Overreact”。主要考虑在2025年1月20日总统就职典礼日之前返回美国，还是基于2017年特朗普政府上任初期实施的移民禁令。该禁令导致许多持有有效签证的国际学生和学者在返回美国时遭遇问题。
另一方面，实际上对留学生影响不大，因为大部分美国学校在1月20号已经开学了，可以说完美错开。至于特朗普上任后的移民政策，我们还需要密切关注。
回国注意事项：
1.提前返回美国：根据建议的时间节点，在潜在的政策实施前完成入境，确保顺利返校或工作。
2.避免不必要的国际旅行：减少国际旅行相关的不确定性风险，尤其是针对政策可能变化的国家或地区。
3.准备完整的入境材料：海关审查可能更加严格，携带齐全的签证、身份和学术/工作证明文件有助于减少入境延误的可能性。
4.关注政策变化和更新信息： 移民政策的调整可能影响国际旅行计划，持续关注学校和移民部门的最新公告有助于及时调整计划。
②寒假不回国，抓紧冲刺GRE！
其实美国留学生整体寒假的时间最多1个月，少则20天，所以回国确实比较折腾！建议大家减少时间和金钱成本投入，降低政策风险，利用好寒假集中备考GRE！
寒假备考GRE的优势：
1、考试有效期长：GRE考试有效期5年，无论你是高三还是大一大二，搞定GRE，拿到325+的分数，之后无论申请研究生还是博士都完全在有效期内。
2、备考周期较短：对于有比较好语言基础的同学来说（托福至少100+），2-3个月可以搞定GRE，寒假前预习单词和数学，寒假1个月学方法+刷题，开学前首考325+分手GRE！
3、更容易考高分：GRE满分340分，其中语文和数学各占170，而中国学生语文平均分152.3，GRE数学平均分165.6。在去年我们的GRE海本班课程结束后，56%的同学可以在首考拿到320+的分数；在我过去一年我带过的美本新大一学生中，有80%可以考到325+，甚至一战就可以330分手！
4、考试时间多：对比在国内，美国的考位提前1-2周就可以安排上！线下考点非常多，甚至你学校里就有！
5、寒假时间短：相对于暑假，大家会安排科研或者实习，但是寒假时间较短，圣诞假期往往只有20多天。更适合集中利用好这1个月的寒假时间，进行GRE的备考突破和冲刺，专项巩固与刷题进阶。避免在学期内无法兼顾学校课程；暑假又有其他事情安排。
