Peter worked as a night watchman in a smallish factory.
One morning the boss came in with a suitcase.
He told Peter he would be flying to New York the next day.
Peter immediately told him not to.
The factory owner asked why.
Peter told him that he had had a nightmare.
In his nightmare he had seen the next day’s plane to New York crashing.
Peter’s boss cancelled his ticket and didn’t fly to New York.
The next day the plane crashed.
The boss thanked Peter and gave him a present. He also sacked him.

night watchman(守夜人)

suitcase(行李箱)

nightmare(噩梦)

crash(坠毁)

cancel(取消)

sack/fire(解雇)

What was Peter’s job in the factory?
Peter was a night watchman in the factory.

Where did the boss say he would be going the next day?
The boss said he would be flying to New York.

Why did Peter tell his boss not to fly to New York?
Peter told his boss not to fly because he had a nightmare in which the plane to New York crashed.

What did Peter see in his nightmare?
Peter saw the plane to New York crashing in his nightmare.

What did the boss do after Peter told him about the dream?
The boss canceled his ticket and decided not to fly to New York.

What happened to the plane the next day?
The plane crashed the next day.

Why do you think the boss fired Peter even though he saved his life?
The boss might have thought Peter’s focus on dreams was unprofessional or that his job as a watchman should not involve such concerns.

If you were Peter, how would you feel about being fired?
I might feel upset and unfairly treated, but also relieved that I saved someone’s life.

Do you think Peter made the right decision to share his nightmare? Why or why not?
Yes, Peter made the right decision because sharing his nightmare potentially saved the boss’s life.

How much do you think dreams or instincts should influence important decisions?
It depends on the situation. Dreams might not always be reliable, but instincts can sometimes be worth considering alongside facts.

What would have happened if the boss had ignored Peter's warning?
The boss might have been on the plane that crashed, and his life could have been at risk.

What did the boss give Peter as a reward? Why did he fire him afterward?
The boss thanked Peter and gave him a present but fired him because he might have thought Peter’s nightmare distracted him from his job or made him unreliable.
