1、China’s Delivery Riders Demand Respect After Major Stand-off
An intense confrontation involving dozens of delivery riders and local security guards in Hangzhou has gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking calls for gig workers to receive stronger protections.
The flare-up began on Monday when a rider damaged some fencing inside a mixed-use development while rushing to deliver a takeout order. Security guards prevented the driver from leaving, demanding that he pay compensation for the damage, according to a statement issued by local police on Tuesday.
The situation escalated when the rider — likely concerned that his other deliveries would be delayed — got down on his knees and begged the guards to release him. This quickly attracted the attention of other delivery workers, who rallied to demand that the guards allow their colleague to leave.
Millions of people work in China’s food delivery industry, but the platforms are notorious for subjecting riders to extremely tight deadlines and imposing penalties for late deliveries and negative customer feedback.

2、China releases revised draft regulation on marriage registration for public comment
China's Ministry of Civil Affairs recently released the revised draft of regulation on marriage registration for public comment. The revised content includes an individual's household register not being required and no regional restrictions for marriage registration, which experts believe will streamline the process and help build a family friendly society.
The public can submit their feedback before September 11, according to the civil affairs ministry.
In comparison to the original regulation on marriage registration issued in 2003, the draft removes the requirement to present a household register during marriage registration.
There will no longer be regional restrictions for registration, with the original regulation requiring that it should be handled at the household registration location of the parties involved.

4、Innovative Chinese university admission letters go viral online
In recent days, admission letters from Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) have been making waves online for being made from special high-tech materials and having unique features - they are fireproof, anti-scald, and the envelop can even be used to cut vegetables.
On social media platforms, several students showed their admission letters of BUCT by cutting watermelons, meat, and other items, testing the durability of the letters and sharing videos online, which has caught the attention of netizens. Many have exclaimed, "This academic qualification is 'tough'!"
The admission letters are made of carbon fiber composite material, with a thickness of only 0.2 millimeters. Carbon fiber is known as the industrial "black gold" and is widely used in aerospace, military, and maritime fields due to its high heat and corrosion resistance.

7、The big cover-up: Shunning the sun has become big business in China
The Chinese, unlike many Western counterparts, don't worship suntans. Just look at the cyclists and pedestrians on the streets during the height of summer – parasols, head-to-toe protective clothing, faces hidden behind quirky "facekinis" and eyes shielded by sunglasses.
Ultraviolet protection from the sun's rays has become big business in China.
The market for UV protective products surged to 74.2 billion yuan (US$10.3 billion) in 2023 and is expected to hit 95.8 billion yuan by 2026.
Hot summers are nothing new in China, but data from the China Meteorological Administration suggests this year may be a record-breaker. Temperatures at 228 national weather stations across the country have soared above 40 degrees Celsius against the stark backdrop of global warming.
"Compared with 2023, 2024 is likely to be hotter, with even more instances of extreme weather events," said Zhou Bing, chief climate services specialist at the National Climate Center.
