1、In Chinese Megacities, ‘Ultra-Long Commutes’ Are on the Rise

Extreme commuting is becoming more common in China’s megacities, with more workers undertaking “ultra-long” journeys to the office, a new report has found.

The findings, released on Oct. 17, paint a picture of a growing polarization in commuting habits, especially in China’s largest metropolises, where very long and very short travel times are both becoming more common.

Long commutes have become a hot-button issue in China over recent years, as rising living costs in megacities push more workers to move further out into the suburbs, where rent tends to be cheaper.

2、China auto company VP faces backlash after video shows him eating hotpot in car

An auto company vice-president in China sparked significant backlash after sharing a video of himself enjoying a hotpot meal inside a new car model from his firm, aiming to promote its multipurpose use and air filtration system.

The marketing stunt has triggered widespread criticism.

“Who came up with this bizarre idea to eat hotpot inside a car? Use some common sense – would you actually cook hotpot in your own car? How would you eliminate the smell and oil splatters?” one person questioned.

Regarding concerns about hotpot odours, the VP described it as part of a “new camping experience”, explaining that the car is equipped with a robust air filtration system to address such issues.

This response stirred even more controversy, with many criticising the hotpot set-up as a gimmick.

5、Doctoral intern dismissed for disrupting ByteDance AI training

Last Friday, a message spread in several WeChat groups stating that the large model training of a leading tech company was infiltrated by an intern, who inserted destructive code to influence the reliability of AI training results.

This incident took place in June when a doctoral student from a university interned with ByteDance’s commercialization tech team. Frustrated with the team’s resource allocation, the intern deployed attack code to disrupt the model training tasks.

This incident reveals security management issues in ByteDance’s technical training processes. With interns often granted critical roles in company projects, there is an urgent need for robust security protocols in tech companies.

7、Huawei launches homegrown HarmonyOS NEXT operating system

Chinese technology giant Huawei launched HarmonyOS NEXT, its self-developed operating system built independent of Android architecture, at an event in south China's Shenzhen on Tuesday.

In 2019, Washington placed Huawei on the "Entity List," barring it from doing business with U.S. firms, including Google, which provides Android.

HarmonyOS NEXT, the fifth iteration of HarmonyOS, is said to have enhanced performance, improved system security and a more seamless user experience compared to previous versions. Previously released versions of HarmonyOS were partially built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). As a result, they required compatibility with some Android apps. However, the new HarmonyOS NEXT is entirely self-developed, with a fully independent foundation.
