Hot Topic Reviews in Drug Delivery (II)
In recent decades, the cross-discipline of drug delivery has experienced rapid progress, with several cutting-edge technologies invented and tens of innovative products successfully marketed, let alone tens of thousands of articles published yearly worldwide. In addition to modifying the therapeutic behaviors of active pharmaceutical ingredients, drug delivery systems or strategies are playing increasingly important and proactive roles; for example, the recent success of the development of mRNA vaccines depends strongly on delivery systems called lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). The topics of delivery systems and technologies are always the focus of intense debate. Timely and authoritative reviews, especially those on more general topics, garner most recent findings and help the audience grasp the panorama overview in the related field and, more importantly, provide critical and insightful expert opinions, which sets a blue map for future endeavors. In 2021, we organized the first edition of "Hot Topic Reviews in Drug Delivery", which was officially published in August 2021. The bibliographic data indicated that this special issue has been well received by the APSB audience. However, owing to space limitations, that special issue included only a limited number of hot topic reviews. Moreover, the drug delivery field has undergone rapid growth in the past three years. Encouraged by the success of the first edition, we feel obliged to organize the second virtual special issue of Hot Topic Reviews in Drug Delivery to include topics that have not been covered in the first edition and, more importantly, to initiate a deeper discussion on current drug delivery systems and technologies. The current VSI is meant to set a platform for prominent scientists worldwide to share and discuss their thoughts and opinions on drug delivery across the wide field of pharmaceutics and drug delivery.
