Trade-offs and Synergies of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Insights from Big Earth Data

The global pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) faces unprecedented challenges, particularly in the intricate interplay among different SDGs, for example, the interactions of food security, water resources, and ecological security which are closely related to human well-being. It becomes imperative to examine the trade-offs and synergies inherent in achieving these critical SDGs. This special issue will delve into multifaceted dimensions, including but not limited to:

1. Multidimensional Trade-offs in Food-Water-Ecology Nexus: In-depth regional studies investigating the trade-offs arising from cropland expansion, abandonment, and intensification, and their subsequent ecological consequences. Exploration of the interconnected impacts on food production, water availability, and ecological stability in diverse geographical contexts.

2. Effectiveness Assessment of Ecological Restoration Projects: Analysis of ongoing ecological restoration initiatives in the face of climate change and escalating human activities. Evaluation of the success and challenges of programs such as the Green for Grain project in China, the Conservation Reserve Program in the US, and agri-environmental measures in the European Union.

3. Trade-offs and Synergies of Agricultural Development under SDGs: Comprehensive examination of the complex dynamics between agricultural development and ecological restoration in alignment with the SDGs. Identification of potential conflicts and pathways for achieving a harmonious balance between food security and ecological sustainability.

4. Scenario Analyses and Future Simulations: Futuristic scenarios exploring the potential outcomes of various strategies in achieving SDGs, considering factors like climate change, technological advancements, and societal shifts. Innovative solutions and policies that foster synergies between agricultural development and ecological security.

5. Methodological Advancements and Data Innovations: Introduction of novel methodologies and data-driven approaches to address the intricate challenges associated with the food-water-ecology nexus. Emphasis on interdisciplinary research and collaborative efforts to enhance our understanding of the complex interactions involved.

Geography and Sustainability的CAR指数
