Bioavailability in the quality control of Traditional Chinese Medicines and strategies to improve human health

Traditional Chinese medicines (including herbal, animal and mineral medicines) and related preparations have made a great contribution to human health for a long history. On one hand, owing to active substances, TCM have demonstrated excellent curative effects and are used extensively on a global scale. On the other hand, one of the main risks with the use of TCM is the presence of exogenous and endogenous toxic substances in TCM. The consumption of TCM polluted by toxic substances through the food chain creates risks for the humans. The effectiveness of TCM is exactly related to the bioavailability for both active and toxic substance in TCM. The goal of this special issue is focus on absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) as well as Bioavailability of both active and toxic substances in TCM, and achieving efficient screening of therapeutic basis and clinical application of TCM from the perspective of human exposure to improve health implications.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advanced technologies to speed up pharmacokinetic and toxicokinetic investigations of active and toxic substances in TCM and related preparations.

  • Pathways and mechanistic understanding of fate and transport of both active and toxic in TCM and related preparations.

  • The mechanism related to bioavailability of active substances in TCM and related preparations.

  • Exposure and quality assessment while taking into account of bioavailability of toxic substances in TCM and related preparations.

  • The clinical application of TCM and related, especially considering the ADME process of both active and toxic substances to assure the quality and safety.
