Yesterday, a friend of mine told me that as long as he has filial piety and compassion in his heart, it’s enough. So, I told him, “Well, if that’s the case, you don’t have to actually eat food. Just think about it in your heart and see if you can survive without eating for ten days.”
When it comes to anything we do, it’s not enough to just have the right intentions in our hearts. It’s equally important to reflect those intentions in our words and actions. This is what we call consistency between words and actions, and it’s only through practicing what we preach that we truly embody our beliefs.
For example, during meals, it is important to let our parents sit first and wait for them to start eating before we do. This is how we demonstrate filial piety as children. However, it’s becoming rare to witness such scenes nowadays. I have been to many of my friends’ homes and have mostly observed parents being filial to their children, but rarely children being filial to their parents.
