The multidisciplinary Sustainable Materials Engineering (SUME) research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to contribute to the development of redox mediators incorporated carbon anodes capable of proceeding the selective oxidation of olefins in mild conditions regarding temperature and O2 content. This 4-year PhD position on advanced experimental and spectro-electrochemical characterization and optimization of state-of-the-art selective oxidation of olefins is part of a Flemish collaborative project involving multiple academic partners.
The research work will be carried out at Electrochemical and Surface Engineering (SURF) laboratory of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in collaboration with the research group Applied Electrochemistry & Catalysis (ELCAT) at the University of Antwerp and Centre for Membrane Separations, Adsorption, Catalysis, and Spectroscopy for Sustainable Solutions (cMACS) at KU Leuven. This vacancy focuses on experimental research.
Description
You will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment with people from all over the world in one large community, oriented to study electrochemical processes combining electrochemical techniques, and surface characterization (both ex-situ and in-situ). The development of the modified anodes will be performed at UA and KUL, while VUB will provide valuable mechanistic insights and methodology due to the state-of-the-art capability of in-depth in situ analysis of (hybrid) interfaces and active surfaces.
To perform this research, you will have access to a wide range of advanced equipment and techniques in electrochemistry such as potentiostats, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and operando odd random phase EIS (ORP-EIS), surface analysis at the nanoscale (FE-SEM, FE-Auger, XPS, Ellipsometry, AFM/STM, Raman, ...), and particularly important for this research work, ATR-FTIR in Kretschmann geometry.

Skills/Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent – Engineering / Chemistry
Strong knowledge in Chemical Reactions, Electrochemistry and IR spectroscopy is a plus!
Good interpersonal and collaborative skills
Excellent communication skills in English both written and spoken
Additional Requirements
Master’s degree with outstanding grades, in physics, chemistry, engineering or materials science, preferably with emphasis on electrochemistry
Excellent lab skills for experiments and data analysis
Interest in challenging projects dealing with the frontier between electrochemistry and surface science
Research experience in a relevant field
Languages ENGLISH Level Excellent
