Dr Bee Hughes

Deputy Course Director Educational Leadership in Practice

Bee is a Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education lecturing in educational policy and leadership. Her research interests centre on leadership of multi- academy trusts, education policy, school collaborations and the work of Hannah Arendt. Her most recent publications include a book chapter entitled Leading in a crisis of public truth: how school leaders are navigating lying in politics. Bee was a school leader in Hong Kong and the UK for over twenty years before working at the University of Manchester.



Prof Steven Courtney

Professor of Sociology of Educational Leadership

Steven Courtney is Professor of Sociology of Education Leadership, researching and writing in areas including system leadership, charisma, depoliticisation and education privatisation, particularly in relation to the identities and practices of those constructed as educational leaders. He is a recipient of the BELMAS Distinguished Service Award and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Teaching and Learning, University of Manchester. Prof Courtney is currently Research Director in the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Critical Studies in Education, co-convenor of the MIE research and scholarship group, Critical Education Leadership and Policy (CELP) and co-convenor of the BELMAS research group, Critical Education Policy and Leadership Studies (CEPaLS). Prof Courtney spent the first part of his professional career teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) in Paris before moving into the secondary state sector as a French and Spanish teacher in inner-London comprehensives. Following almost a decade in leadership positions, first as Head of MFL and then Assistant Headteacher, he moved to Manchester to complete an MA in Educational Leadership and School Improvement.



Dan Leng

MA Educational Leadership in Practice Graduate

Dan has been working in International Education for over 12 years, and recently completed her studies on MA Educational Leadership in Practice. During her studies she has benefited from understanding how policy can be evaluated, analysed, reflected upon and revised. She credits her studies in helping her to develop professionally and improve her leadership skills.
